US Sikhs protest alleged illegal confinement of prisoners

NEW YORK: Hundreds of US-based Sikhs gathered at Times Square here on Sunday to highlight the allegedly illegal confinement of Sikh political prisoners in Indian prisons despite completing their sentences.

The crowd wore fake shackles during the ‘Freedom Rally’ aiming to bring international attention to the imprisonment of 80 Sikh political prisoners in India.

It also sought to bring attention to the health of civil rights activist Surat Singh Khalsa, a California resident who has been on fast-unto-death since January 16 in protest against the continued imprisonment of Sikh political prisoners, rights group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) said.
