Wedded couple: Ruchi Mukherjee and Walter Sassard

HOUSTON: Ruchi’s dedication to journalism and the Houston community has made her one of Houston’s most successful and impactful leading women, founding LCAHouston and immersing herself in Houston’s chic society life. Since moving to the USA in 2002, Ruchi has been a TV and print correspondent for The Statesman and Times of India but is most known for her LCAHouston International Mother’s Day Awards. Ruchi finds the balance between her personal and professional lives equally important.

“As a little girl, I always believed in having a true partner to travel with, to work together, experience things. Someone who will understand my passion for fashion and journalism,” Ruchi expressed, “Someone who’s consistent, someone who will make me a priority.”

And Ruchi finally met her perfect match in the summer of 2020 and feeling a mutual instant connection with Walter Sassard.

His being a New York fashion photographer turned firefighter and Ruchi a society lifestyle journalist, they were quite the unexpected match up.

“At first glance, we’re worlds apart, but our hearts and souls are so together,” Ruchi revealed.

Ruchi celebrated her special day with her bridesmaids. They all have been a huge part of her journey through life, both personally and professionally. She holds her maid of honor Toni Tate and bridesmaids Sippi Khurana, Rita Garcia, Sadaf Choudhury, Meka Coxon, Sneha Merchant, Teresa Reading, Purva Patel, and Pooja Lodhia and her own daughter Aryika.

Walter now works as a Lieutenant at the Magnolia Fire Department since moving from New York in 2013. Early in their relationship, a work accident injured Walter for a taxing five-month period. While it seemed hopeless, he found comfort in Ruchi as she stayed by his side during the whole healing process. The relationship’s stability anchored them through the strains of work, COVID-19, and everyday obstacles, and Ruchi and Walter knew they could always turn to the other for genuine support, advice, or just a shoulder to lean on.

“Something that really made our relationship solid: I finally felt that I had a true partner by my side,” Walter voiced.

Although simply being together was more than enough for the couple, Walter wanted to give Ruchi the fairytale Hindu wedding which they had always dreamed of.

Ruchi’s close friends were her bridesmaids

Together, this Diwali (Indian Festival of Lights) they designed a beautiful month long pre wedding celebrations and with their blended family Ruchi’s daughter Aryika and Walter’s two children Luella and Felix who has embraced them from the beginning. The relationship was blessed with a traditional Hindu ceremony with friends and family from all over the world at Galveston’s historical Bryan Museum on November 3, 2024.

They wanted people closest to experience the cultures so dear to them and feel inspired by love.

Ruchi has always strived to support local businesses and wants to continue doing so in the wedding, planning a showcase of culture and traditions that incorporates aspects of both the East and West.  This highlight of the wedding was the Sangeet at Indian Summers Restaurant in Sugarland with an afternoon of live music by Rashmi Panikar and Shayan.

The message that Ruchi wants to convey with her story is to never lose hope for true love, while also continuing to improve yourself. Although her and Walter’s history reads like a magical fairytale, she knows relationships need nurturing.

  • Sushain Cherivirala Weds Snigdha Sharma

    Sushain Cherivirala Weds Snigdha Sharma

    By Jawahar Malhotra

HOUSTON: It was a case of two high achievers meeting at freshman orientation at Carnegie Melon University. Though they were in different colleges – he in Computer Science and she in Engineering – chance meetings developed into serious dating and slowly the relationship blossomed over a space of seven years.

But it wasn’t until Sushain graduated from Stanford University with a Master’s in Computer Science -he finished it in one year (after he had completed his BS in an incredible two-and-a half years) – that his parents realized there was something between them when Snigdha Sharma showed up at the graduation ceremony. “We knew then they were deeply attached to each other,” said Sushain’s father, Ramesh Cherivirala. Then, last May, on a trip to the British Isles, Sushain proposed.

That immediately set off both sets of parents into planning the wedding events. Snigdha’s extended family hails from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India while her parents Gyanesh, a software engineer at Oracle and Renu, an elementary school teacher, live in Seattle. They held a religious engagement ceremony in Varanasi last November 24. The next day, Ramesh and Anuradha Cherivirala threw a reception in Hyderabad, Telegana for their extended Indian family.

Six months later, on May 15, 2023, the young couple tied the knot in a traditional Hindu ceremony at The Springs Event Venue in Cypress, just northwest of Houston.

The following day, the Cheriviralas hosted a wedding reception for the newlyweds at the GSH Events Center in Houston. The foyer was jam packed with appetizers and cocktails while the finishing touches were being put on inside the enormous Grand Hall which was set up for 600 people. The décor was spectacular and the ceremony included dances, speeches, entertainment and loving tributes by many of the extended families and friends from far and near. The desserts table, set up in the second foyer, was likewise mobbed by eager guests, who also got their paans at a separate booth.

Ramesh is well known in the Indian community in Houston for his volunteer work, spearheading many charitable causes and running for political office as well as being a leading insurance agent. Many guests included many prominent Indo-American community leaders, as well as everyone’s favorite “mama”, my mother, the 95-year-old Mrs Shakuntla Malhotra.

A touching moment came when Sushain’s middle school health teacher Regina Crafter, (a former Ms. Texas America 2015) reminisced glowingly about his experiences and accomplishments. In her speech, Crafter, who is a cancer survivor, said that she had prayed that she would be alive to attend Sushain’s wedding. She fondly calls him “son”, attended his college graduation in Pittsburgh and does not want to miss any of the milestones in his life.

After a honeymoon in Taiwan, the newlyweds will make their home in the Bay Area where Sushain, 26, works at Stripe while Snigdha, 25 is a software engineer.

IAN has reported on Sushain’s accomplishments over the years starting from the winning of Bevan Scholar for a perfect score in SAT in the 7th grade. This led him  to be invited to IBM’s office in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he was celebrated for being the youngest “Master the mainframe” contest winner (https://indoamerican-news.com/students-bring-new-blood-to-venerable-ibm-units/). He was also the only Google code-in contest winner from Fort Bend ISD (https://indoamerican-news.com/cherivirala-wins-second-google-code-in-grand-prize/).

  • The Wedding was Elaborate, but the Shahs had Prepared for Years

The Wedding was Elaborate, but the Shahs had Prepared for Years

    By Jawahar Malhotra

HOUSTON: When Mahesh and Alpa Shah started to plan out their daughter Mosum’s wedding to Umang Jain, they didn’t really have to look too far. They already knew the venues across the metropolitan area, could plan out the menus in their sleep, knew all the major wedding planners and were close to the vendors for party items. They already trusted their favorite DJ – Yogi G – to handle all the music and sound for the event.

“Still, it was a great deal of constant work for 6 months”, recalled Alpa, “because we kept adding people and programs to what turned out to be a four-day wedding event”. And since they are co-owners of the 30 year-old Madras Pavilion restaurant – renamed Indian Summer two years ago – along with Rajan Radhakrishnan, they had the experience to pull off a huge event. After all, they were the ones chosen to serve lunch to thousands when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the city for the “Howdy Modi” event at the NRG stadium in September 2019.

But when its your daughter, things can get quite elaborate very quickly. Before too long, there was a mehndi planned for 175 guests in the well-lit backyard by the side of the lake at the Shah residence in New Territory. There was music, mehndi painting artists, and delicious food cooked on tavas and in a tandoor, all creating a lively evening. This was just the beginning of the feasts whose menus were master planned for four days by Mahesh and Alpa. And helping them in planning every detail was event planner Rathi Menon.

The next day, the Pithi ritual was carried out at the roof-top Texas lazy river and pool of the downtown Marriott Marquis Hotel, within sight and across Discovery Park from the Hilton Americas where the wedding reception was to take place. The bride and groom were seated on a low bajat and a paste of turmeric, sandalwood, rosewater and herbs was applied on their faces and palms. The merriment continued as the bride and groom were plunged into the pool by their friends.

That evening the sangeet was held at the Marquis, decorated lavishly by Dipti of Mandap Creations with a rickshaw as a centerdrop for photos opps. Both sides of the families did the garba, raas and Sanedo folk dances, to the accompaniment of singing by Sushila Patel and Hemant Bhavsar with Darshak Thakkar on drums. Lined around the Grand Ballroom were many food “stalls” named Kuch Khichdi Hai, Bhel Baja Baarat, Desi Takos, Chandani Chowk to China,  Hum Chaat Hai, Garvi Gujarat and many more. The juice counter served Aam panna, Guava Juice and Mix Berries infused with jalapeños.

The next day, March 12, the venue shifted to Chateau Cocomar, a 37,000 square foot French-Inspired estate tucked away privately in a forested corner of Champions Forest.  There, the mandap was set up outdoors in the forest. The baratis arrived at 11am with the groom in a convertible Rolls Royce, and all the groomsmen and brides aid danced energetically to the dholl and Bollywood music. Carbon dioxide cannisters were blasted off as Mosum was carried in in a Palki for the wedding that ended at 2:30pm. After the ceremony, the guests were treated to a sumptuous Gujarati and Rajasthani lunch.

The reception that night was at the Hilton Americas where the Dawat Catering crew, led by Rajan Radhakrishnan and Mahesh Shah have served so many occasions that they are almost part of the hotel! This time, Rajan placed his full attention on the arrangements made over countless days. There were several stalls serving sushi, paneer, Italian liquid pizza, khichu-khow suey, and 20 other hors d’ouvres in the large lobby and a guest list of over 700 who were truly amazed.

Dipti with Mandap Creations turned the Grand Ballroom into a veritable white rose garden with a water fountain and crystal decorative pieces. A giant LED screen at the center and large screens at two corners allowed guests to view all the action and entertainment. The wedding party pranced onto the floor and as the newlyweds came in, indoor fireworks electrified the moment as they danced their entry number.

As guests listened to speeches by the parents, siblings and best friends, dinner was served at the tables in three courses thalis of North India, Asian and South Indian food, “something that had never been done before”, remarked Rajan, who organized the food service and supervised in exhaustive detail every minute of the reception for a whole week.

The food was meticulously prepared head chefs Sibin and Sathiyaraj and their team from Dawat Catering and Indian Summer restaurant while Shakab and Keshvan managed the food arrangement. For dessert, there was a special treat performance honoring the Shahs as the Executive Chefs of Hilton Americas made Fire and Ice, smashing huge balls of chocolate on a block of ice and then setting it on fire!

When Umang Met Mosum, it was Love at First SIght

Their first date was at Café Ba-Ba-Reeba in Chicago in October 2016, where Umang and Mosum realized they had a special spark between them. During Chicago’s freezing winter, they spent lots of time together at Old Town restaurants, dance clubs and university (him at Northwestern, her at UChicago) hubs.

Umang moved to Philadelphia for residency at UPenn and Mosum joined him and earned her MBA at Wharton. In November 2020, Umang took Mosum for a walk along historic Addison Street where he had cleverly tied envelopes in the trees which Mosum had to open, with the final one popping the question that Mosum said “yes” to.

Thrilled to be finally married, the happy newlyweds went on a honeymoon to Guatemala.

The newlyweds with the groom’s parents Ricki Oberoi and Dr. Asra Oberoi

    By Jawahar Malhotra

CANCUN, MEXICO: It was the stuff that Bollywood weddings are made of: 320 guests flew in from across the globe – North America, Europe, Asia, Africa – all descending on the Planet Hollywood hotel on the peninsula in the tourist playground city of Cancun. They came for a 3-day, 4-event extravaganza and royal treatment spread
out with the Sangeet on the beach, with the traditional Punjabi wedding and reception for Rish Oberoi and Alysha Alibhai.

The groom’s parents, Ricki and Dr. Asra Oberoi and his mom Nisha Smith had made impeccable arrangements that went over the top like using 20,000 roses and fresh flowers for the event; Indian food by a Taj trained chef Sanjeev Rana; live music by Bollywood violinist and singer Tabriz; Houston DJ Yogi flown in for the music and a live Bhaji band to lead the barat. And of course, the groom came on a white stallion.

ANGLETON, TX: You can tell how deeply two people are in love when they still remember not just how they met, but even the date and other memorable dates that came along. And it helps if you are as intense a person as Ashna Kataria is.

She remembers the night of Monday, December 9, 2013 when she met Rohan Buntval. She was ready to go to bed, when her friends texted her to come to the library. Her roommate Melissa asked why she was getting ready and she teasingly replied “because I might meet the love of my life today.” Rohan usually studied at home, but a mutual friend, Mustafa Jawad set them up and they met at 2:30am that night!

Two months later, they finally went on their first date on Friday, February 2, 2014 and realized there was a spark. Two and a half years later, on Thursday, July 7, 2016, surrounded by friends on a boat on Lake Travis, Rohan surprised her by popping the question.

With the help of their parents, the couple began planning their wedding in India, paid deposits and made arrangements for clothes, with plans to go there in August to finalize everything. “Then Hurricane Harvey hit and everything came to a stop,” recalled Sangeeta Dua, the bride’s mother. “We decided then to move the event here and started pursuing venues and vendors in earnest.”

But in October Ashna’s 93 year-old dadaji (paternal grandfather) Sanval Dass Kataria had a heart attack and was hospitalized. The distressed family thought of postponing the wedding, but dadaji objected and insisted that the wedding go on as planned. He became stable and was discharged from the hospital, only to stumble while coming home from the grocery store, and fell. He never recovered and passed away on Monday, November 13, just days before the wedding. But his last wish was that the wedding go on and he be remembered joyfully in the festivities.

The wedding was held on Saturday, October 25 at the Magnolia Manor of the Springs Event Venue in Angleton, about an hour south of downtown Houston. The groom rode a white horse and came with his baratis and the Hindu ceremony was conducted by Pandit Pradeep Pandey (of the Siddhivinayak Temple on Hillcroft) under the gazebo, with many relatives and friends of both sides from India, Hong Kong, Australia, Connecticut and other places taking part. The reception was held inside the two-story banquet building with the large chandelier and indoor second-floor observation walkabout. Family friends Arun and Vinni Verma provided the party favors for every guest and large trays of dry fruits for Rohan’s family.

Ashna Kataria, 23, was born in Norwalk, Connecticut and raised in Houston. She attended the University of Texas at Austin where she majored in quantitative finance with a minor in psychology. She is currently an insurance underwriter with AIG in Houston. Ashna is the granddaughter of Sheela Kataria and the late Sanval Dass Kataria and Dr. B.L. and Sunita of New Delhi. Her father Amit Kataria has his own IT firm, Network Guru and her mother Sangeeta Dua is a well-known media personality and a Somatologist  and Aesthetic Instructor, running a beauty training center. They have a younger son, Arya, 16.

Rohan Buntval, also 23, was born and raised in South Plainfield, New Jersey and also in Bangalore. He received a Bachelors in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and works at Sulzer in La Porte. Rohan is the grandson of the late Hanumantha and Laxmidevi Bhat Buntval and Srinivas and Padmavathi Shenoy. His father Narsim Buntval has a BSc in Electronics & Communications, a Masters in Computer Science and an MBA in Finance & Marketing and his mother Pratima Buntval is an accountant who worked at Motorola and at Investment banks in New York. They both currently live in Manipal, India helping needy and poor through an NGO. Their younger son Karan is in Bard College at Simons Rock, MA.

WASHINGTON, DC: They met seven years ago while volunteers in the US Peace Corps in Togo, a slither of a country in the hump of Western Africa. He was stationed in the tiny village of Aheppe in the southeast while she was in the northwest, ten hours to the north by jungle taxi. But the distance and the drudgery of riding in a barebones taxi with strangers picked up along the way, along bumpy roads, passing by the tall, branchless-till-the-bushy-top boabap trees, couldn’t deter them once they had found each other.

So, it was with some degree of surprise when Jeremy sent his parents a picture of the side profile of Kathryn looking up to a baopap tree. And at their wedding celebration, her parents remembered how they knew “this thing was serious” when Kathryn asked if Jeremy could join the family for a short vacation in South Africa.

It only got more serious as time passed by and they both had completed their two-year tour in the Peace Corps. After a short period working in NGOs in Washington, DC, they both went for their Masters degrees at Columbia University in New York and after they finished in May 2016, moved to Yangon, Maynmar (better known to many Indians as Rangoon, Burma) where Kathryn worked for the Clinton Health Initiative as the head of the Malaria Eradication Program for the region and Jeremy worked with NGOs doing conflict resolution work until he relocated this past May to Washington, DC to work with the State Department. This past Saturday, October 28, the young couple celebrated their wedding in the historic Dumbarton House on Q Street in the heart of the Washington, DC. It was a close affair with family and many friends who came from across the country and beyond: Jeremy’s mother’s family from Paris, France and Geneva, Switzerland; his father’s family from Chicago, New York, Washington, DC, Maryland and Houston; and Kathryn’s family from England, Minneapolis and Cleveland. The wedding itself was non-religious and non-traditional, with respect paid to Hindu traditions too. Afterwards, following drinks and hors d’ourves in the garden, the reception was held in the downstairs banquet hall which spilled into a tented addition.

At lunch with Jeremy and Kathryn Malhotra, the day after the celebration, were the extended family of the groom from Washington, DC; Paris, France, Houston, Texas and Fredrick, Maryland.

The wedding was made extra special as Jeremy’s two grandmothers were there to attend – Edith Giacchetti, 92, from Paris, France and Shakuntla Malhotra, 89, from Houston, Texas. Unable to attend but there in mind were Kathryn’s grandmothers Rose Sullivan, 90, of Cleveland and Ann Davis, 88 of Chicago.

Kathryn Davis, who just turned 32, was born in New York City but raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota with her younger sister Beth. After finishing her Bachelor’s degree in International Studies from George Washington University, she spent two years in the US Peace Corps in Togo, Africa and later received a Masters in Public Health from Columbia University in May 2016. She will be relocating to the US after finishing her work assignment in Myanmar later this year. She is the daughter of Michael Davis, who retired as the Executive VP of Human Resources at General Mills and his wife Celia who has a photography business, both of Minneapolis.

He received his Bachelors from the College of Media and Communications at the University of Houston, Main Campus in 2009 then worked in the US Peace Corps for two years in Togo, Africa. He is the son of Indo American News Publisher Jawahar Malhotra in Houston and Dr. Claudine Giacchetti, a Professor of French Literature at the University of Houston, Main Campus.

The couple will spend a week long honeymoon in upstate New York and Montreal, Canada before returning to Washington, DC where they will settle for now, depending on where their work may take them in the future.

  • Rita Golikeri Weds Eric Wood

FORT WORTH, TX: Some may call it coincidence while others would say it’s karma. But this couple who had met in this North Texas town just west of Dallas didn’t really believe in anything like that when they were introduced by some mutual friends one Spring evening in 2014. They didn’t really appreciate how the stars had aligned to keep them close together till a fateful day in March 2015 when Rita was matched to her OB Gyn residency program at the John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

“Till then, we were wondering what would happen if I got selected to another hospital elsewhere in the country,” recalled Rita Golikeri “and how our relationship would evolve.” Eric Wood had a satisfying job at Lockheed Martin, the giant aerospace and defense contractor in Fort Worth, and any move would require him to consider his prospects elsewhere. The couple had already endured 3 months of rotations for Rita in Atlanta and Chicago and had flown to be with each other on weekends. Their big hope was that Rita would find her residency match someplace close by.

Even after that happened, Rita wasn’t sure where things were going between them. “Eric wanted to buy a house and I told him that before we moved in together, I wanted a commitment.” But she wasn’t quite prepared for the way that he arranged that. On the weekend in February 2016 when he had to close on the house, Eric invited the parents from both sides to come to town, then convinced Rita to come back home early on the pretense of having some urgent work to finish. When she got home, she was surprised to find both sets of parents waiting and Eric pulled out the engagement ring!

Eric and Rita were married this past weekend on Saturday, September 2 in the Omni Hotel Fort Worth in a traditional Hindu ceremony attended by a host of family and friends, with Rita’s Aunt officiating as the priest. The sangeet was held the day before in the T&P Station, a popular wedding venue in the city.

Rita Golikeri, 29, was born and brought up in the Houston area. She received her undergraduate degree in Public Health from Tulane University and then her medical degree at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. She is currently in her third year of residency. Her father Sudhir Golikeri is a semi-retired chemical engineer and her mother Ranjana is a homemaker. Her grandmother Radha Golikeri, 93, is a sprightly and energetic lady who organized graduation programs for high-school seniors for many years in Clear Lake. Rita has two other siblings, Rohit, 30 and Rima, 33.

Eric Wood, 31, has bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech University and has worked for Lockheed Martin since he graduated. His mother Karen Wood-Batcheller is a nurse practitioner at the Fairfax County Department of Health and his late father, William Wood III (who passed away in 2004) was the US Geographer in the State Department. His mother has since remarried to Alan Batcheller. Eric has an older sister, Jessica, 33.

The newlyweds will leave next weekend for a honeymoon in Cancun and then return to their home in Fort Worth where they got engaged.

    HOUSTON:

They met, perchance, at a wedding, which is the one place where busy young professionals have an opportunity to check others out and be introduced to people outside their normal orbit. The notion of six degrees of separation was not only true in their case, but a little persuasion from their friends led to them down the altar four years later.

So when Namrita Singh went to the wedding of one of her closest friends, Anjana, she had no idea that the groom, Sameer’s best friend Mathew Mathew, who had flown in from Chicago, was going to be the one who would captivate her heart. The two hit it off at the wedding, and with a little cajoling from their common friends, were soon calling each other and meeting when they could. It was a tale of two cities, between New York where Namrita lived and worked and Chicago where Mathew grew up and worked.

This past weekend, which was also celebrated as Diwali, the young couple tied the knot at two weddings held in the faiths they grew up in. First at the Gurdwara Sahib of Southwest Houston off Highway 6 on Friday, October 28 where they were married according to the rituals of the Sikh faith of Namrita’s family, with all the gusto of a typical afternoon Punjabi wedding. And then, a day later in the evening of October 29 at the Holy Rosary Church, Midtown on Milam near Louisiana, according to the Christian faith of Mathew’s family.

A wedding reception followed at the Silver Street Studios which was transformed into a lavish dinner and dancing venue for the 460 invited guests. The wedding coordinator was Rathi Menon of Rathi Menon Events; with decor by Nalini from Decor One; food by Dawat Catering and sound, lights and music by DJ Chani.

Namrita Singh, 28, of Houston, graduated from New York University’s Stern School of Business and works for iSoftStone, a digital marketing company, as a consultant to the luxury fashion house Coach in New York. She is the daughter of Bobby Singh, an industrial engineer in private practice who has been in the US since 1973. Her mother, Preeti, is a busy homemaker and community organizer active in several local charities. She has a younger sister, Simrit, 27.

Mathew, 31, was born and raised in the Chicago area and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He works as a financial engineer with State Street Bank. He is the son of Jude Mathew, an engineer and Dr. Molly Mathew, an anesthesiologist, both of whom hail from Kerela, India. He has a younger sister, Anita, 27.

After a mini-honeymoon in Charleston, North Carolina, the couple plan to make their home in New York City.

SUGAR LAND:Everyone who knew Vishal Nigam growing up in the Bayou City teased him about how long he was taking to find the right soul mate and many had written him off as a confirmed bachelor. But luck intervened in the form of an Indian friend Kalpana who was cross-culturally married to an Anglo guy Jamie who just happened to have a sister who they had been trying to get hitched up. They arranged for the two meet and would you believe it, the stars aligned and they hit it off from the start.

Six months later the two – Dr. Vishal Nigam and Carrie Delany Rhodes – finally got engaged, much to the relief of both sets of parents, in Seattle where Carrie is from. And this past weekend, on Saturday, October 22, Vishal’s parents, Dr. Mool and Kamlesh Nigam, held a reception for the couple at Sweetwater Country Club. There was a simple Hindu ceremony followed by festive Indian wedding songs with a dholki accompaniment, sung by several of the Nigam’s female friends.

All of Carrie’s immediate family flew or drove in for the ceremony, and most of the women were dressed in saris or lenghas, with jewelry to match. Kamlesh hand made the besan ladoos to give as party favors and Carrie’s mom Jean and Dad Scott spoke about their family history and the future. A tired but elated Kamlesh told the couple “now it’s up to you to make your own highway.” And everyone teased Vishal’s younger sister Anjali that it was her turn next!

HOUSTON: It was a passion for teaching that destined them to the same high school, but it was the proverbial copy machine that finally brought them together! After their undergraduate degrees, both taught at Robert E. Lee High School in Houston’s west side. Kelly was standing in a job fair line in a school district in Chicago when a representative from HISD suggested she go south. And Kelly agreed, as if Fate was pointing her in the direction of Arun, who had volunteered in a Teach For America program after his undergraduate degree and was sent to the same high school.

Their first meeting happened in the Fall of 2010. After Arun had spotted Kelly teaching in her classroom, he would purposely go to the copier at the furthest end of the corridor from his own classroom to sneak a peek at her. A week later, her plucked up enough courage to talk to her. He asked her out for a Friday night date and the romance was kindled!

Almost six years later, Kelly and Arun were married on June 18, 2016 in Bay Harbor, Michigan, a small idyllic town on the shores of Lake Michigan in a non-religious American wedding and later a Hindu wedding. This past Saturday, July 16, they held a reception for their family and numerous friends at the Houstonian Hotel on North Post Oak.

Arun Kumar Bala, 29, grew up in Houston and graduated from the McCombs Business School at the University of Texas in Austin and then joined the Teach for America program, teaching math at Robert E. Lee High School in Houston. He went on to dental college at Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine and graduated in May 2016. In July, he started a three residency program in orthodontics at Baylor Dental College in Dallas.

Arun’s parents, Dr. Nat and Anu Bala have lived in Houston for more than 30 years. Nat is a gastroenterologist in Houston and practices in the Clear Lake area and Anu is very active in community affairs and in helping her daughter, Meera, a third-year resident in internal medicine, and son-in-law Nate Avila, who just started his fellowship in gastroenterology, with their four-year old son Jayden.

Kelly Ann Pfister, 27, received her Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Kelly wanted to teach in an underserved school away from home when she was offered a job in Houston ISD. Kelly is passionate about teaching and continued to teach in Houston while Arun moved to New York to go to dental school. After Lee High School she taught at Kipp Academy – a magnet school for the underserved. She was the winner of the Kinder Excellence in Teaching Award in 2015. Kelly’s parents, Paul, a practicing attorney and Katherine Pfister both live in Michigan.

After a brief honeymoon in Banff, Canada, the couple will live in Dallas where Arun will finish his residency.

HOUSTON: It all started at a friend’s birthday party and there were many people around. He recalls her coming up to him and starting a conversation and thought she was really courageous and bold. She thought he was kind of shy, but really wanted him to call her later and found a way to get her number to him. He still remembers the date well: May 20, 2010.

The next day, he did call her and then it became a daily habit and pretty soon they were inseparable.

“He was so honest, open and caring. We’ve been together everyday ever since then,” smiled Shauna Paul as she gave her husband of 15 days a quick glance at the anniversary party of his Dad’s younger brother. Almost six years later, the couple was married in two ceremonies: the first on February 1 at Taj Hall in a Hindu ceremony officiated by Dilip Shastri and later on February 5 at St. Cyril Catholic Church by Father Mario. The reception was held on February 5 also at Chateau Crystale on Gessner and Westheimer.

Nadeem, 28, got his degree in accounting in 2014 from the University of Houston Downtown and went straight to work for RPBS, a wholesale book company. He is studying to take his CPA exam next year. His father Madhukar, who got a Master’s in Civil Engineering from Kiev, Ukraine, moved his family to Houston in 1999 from their native Nepal when Nadeem was 12 years-old, to work with his family and now runs his own medical supply business. Nadeem’s mother Nayna used to have her own beauty salon.

Shauna, 25, received her certificate as a paralegal from the University of Houston Main Campus in November 2014. She works as a paralegal in the area of family law with Clark & Jordan, LC. She was born in Karachi, Pakistan and moved here with her family when she was 8 years-old. Her father Daniel Paul has his own travel agency, Lifetime Travel, and her mother Sharon is a homemaker.

After a romantic honeymoon in Destin, Florida, the couple returned to their home in Houston, which they plan to call home for now.

Dinker and Iren Amatya celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a couple of hundred of their family and friends on Saturday, February 20 at Taj Hall.

    By Jawahar Malhotra

HOUSTON: They may have met a few times in the same college they went to in Katmandu, Nepal but they didn’t know that their fates would bring them even closer together years later. He was a busy soccer player, having formed the 3 Star Club and if he wasn’t practicing, he was competing against other teams. He was a soccer player on the national team. She was busy with the usual college activities and concentrated on studies. And then, he got a scholarship to study engineering in Russia.

Instead he decided to come to the US in 1984, where he had an older sister, and opened a grocery store in Atlanta, Georgia.  Seven years later, he went back home, and his parents had arranged a marriage for him with the same girl whom he used to meet occasionally in college, as if Fate had pre-ordained it!

This past Saturday, February 20, Dinker and Iren Amatya must have remembered that time well, as they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a few hundred family and friends at the Taj Hall on Savoy Drive, off Harwin Drive. They sat garlanded on stage as others posed for pictures with them and then after dinner, let loose in a loud night of dancing and partying.

Dinker and Iren moved to Houston in 1991 to be closer to his sister Dr. Anjali Jain who has a pain management practice near Hillcroft and Harwin. The Amatyas have built a business in medical supplies, billings, collections and help to manage Dr. Jain’s clinic. They have two children, Devin, 20, in college at the University of Texas and Alina, 16, still in high school and they have kept their passion for Nepalese culture alive in many ways. Dinker was one of the founder of the Nepalese Association of Houston and is currently the President of the Shri Krishna Pranami Mandir and Pashupatinath Mandir in Richmond.

But he never lost his passion for soccer. A while back Dinker formed the 3 Star Club USA for teams to compete every year for a Nepal Day trophy. “I still get to play sometimes,” he grinned.

SUGAR LAND: They were almost neighbors living in the northwest part of the city and certainly went to the same school district but different high schools: he went to Cy-Falls and she went to Cy-Fairs but their paths didn’t cross then. Call it Fate or one of those happy coincidences in Life; they finally met through some common friends while going to the University of Texas in Austin. And then, slowly, they became inseparable.

And then the paced picked up. Soon, before his sister Hiba got married, Saif Ali Kazim and Nermeen Simone Khan were married according to Muslim traditional rites with the nikah ceremony taking place last June. The rukhsati or bidayee ceremony was set for January and two receptions were held in the past few days. In some parts of India, they call this the gauna when the bride goes to the groom’s house months after the formal wedding.

The bride’s parents held the first reception, a colorful ceremony, on Friday, January 1 at the Doubletree Hilton. This was followed a couple of days later, on Sunday afternoon, January 3 with a traditional Muslim Valima reception hosted by Saif’s parents at the Texas Safari Ranch in Sugar Land. Saif’s friends and sister delighted in ribbing him one last time as a newlywed, much to his consternation. His college professor, Dr. Akbar Hyder who teaches Comparative Literature at UT Austin read a long poem in Urdu (giving English translations in between) as he gave some words of advice to the young couple who sat nervously on stage in tall armchairs.

Saif Kazim, 24, graduated in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin and is now finishing his law degree at the University of Chicago, from where he will graduate in June 2016. He is the son of Haider Kazim, a veteran journalist who has worked in several newspapers in India, the Middle East and the United States, including this newspaper. His mother Asra is a former school-teacher who currently owns and operates a daycare, Little Scholars Learning Center, on Westheimer. Saif has an older sister, Hiba, who was married last June to Hadi Mirza.

Nermeen Khan, also 24, majored in chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin and is now working at Brown and Caldwell, an environmental engineering firm, in Houston. Her father Irfan Khan, an engineer by profession, runs a postal business and her mother, Saadia, is also an engineer by profession and works for FMC Technologies in Houston.

Both receptions were attended by a large number of people, including many guests from India, the Middle East and Canada as well as friends and relatives from across the US. After a honeymoon in Belize, the couple intends to make their home, for the time being, in Houston until Saif graduates and chooses the next step in his career.

SUGAR LAND: It was a memorable occasion for the people who came to meet Gaurav Mathur again at the luncheon at Sweetwater Country Club this past Sunday, November 15, on a sunny Fall day that lifted everyone’s spirits. Many remembered him the affable young man who grew up in their midst; with many of the uncles and aunties recalling stories of his time in Houston and several of the younger set who were his playmates embracing the new milestones in his life. Except now, he was the Dean of Graduate Program and Continuing Education at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC.

His parents, Nalini and Dr. Virendra S. Mathur were overcome with emotion as they introduced their son and his partner, Dr. Gaurav Arora to their long list of guests and friends and welcomed Arora into their family. Dr. Mathur beamed with pride as he read from the long list of academic and work achievements of his son, despite his hearing and speech impairment, over the years from the time he was in high school to university and till now. He was equally proud of Dr, Arora’s achievements as he read them off. The two Gauravs met eight years ago in Washington DC, where they both live.

Gaurav Mathur, 43, was born in Houston and excelled in schooling from a very early age inspite of his hearing handicap. He moved to a regular school after 3rd grade and then jumped a grade to go to Middle and High School at The Kinkaid School where he topped his class and was the only deaf student among his peers. He went onto Princeton (where he wrote his own curriculum as they did not have one in Linguistics), graduating with Honors and completed his Masters and PhD in Linguistics at M.I.T. in Boston, with a full scholarship. He was the first and only deaf student who received his PhD in Linguistics at MIT.

Mathur worked through research departments and when he became a Faculty member, he had become a national and international authority in his field, joining Ohio State University and later moving to Gallaudet University seven years ago where he received tenure in four years and became acting Dean two years ago and this summer became Dean in his current position.

Gaurav Arora, 37, was born and raised in Mumbai, but as he lost his father at the tender age of 18, he was forced to mature early and help take care of his mother and raise his younger brother. He finished a BSc in Chemistry Honors from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai and went on to get a Masters in Biochemistry from the University of Mumbai. He came to the US to obtain a Masters in Bioinformatics at Georgia State University and then completed a PhD in Molecular Evolution at the Georgia Institute of Technology. After graduation, he worked at Georgetown University focusing on Genomics and is currently on a tenure-track Faculty of Biology at Gallaudet University’s Department of Science, Technology and Mathematics. He has been published in several peer journals and is a scholar with the American Society of Microbiology.
