Arya Samaj Houston Celebrates Republic Day, MLK Day of Service

    BY ANJANA KALITA

HOUSTON: Arya Samaj Houston celebrated 70th Republic Day with great reverence on Sunday, 27th Jan 2019. The regular weekly Satsang heard the loftier Vedic ideas that build a strong nation. We were reminded that Arya Samaj was the strongest force to earn the country’s freedom with almost 80% of freedom fighters originating from it, the top nation building organization founded by Maharshi Dayanand in 1875. The entire congregation gathered in the outside lawn near the flagpole joined by the children, teachers and volunteers of its Sunday School, DAV Sanskriti School. The unfurling of the national flag was followed by singing of the National Anthem, “Jana Gana Mana” by everybody. The ambience reverberated with Jai Hind and Vande Mataram.

Sanjay Sood conducted this gala day event and delighted to share a glimpse on the Indian history focused on Republic Day in 1950 that witnessed declaration of secular, sovereign republic that India is. The celebration, truly reminiscing for everyone, brings all the people of Indian origin together and instills a feeling of nationalism and patriotism in their hearts. Colonel Upneja, who served Indian army shared traumatic memories of Sino-Indian war in 1962. He shed light on bravely fought Indian army at high altitude without quality weapons and lack of ammunition. Even after inevitable losses in 1962 war, whole Indian nation united tremendously afterwards. Sqn. Ldr. S.S. LaL who served for 35 years in AFMC, also touched upon golden past and revealed how Indian army bravely fought. Both speeches gave listeners good enough goosebumps, teary-eyed and feeling proud at the same time.

Not to be left behind, Lakshya Yadav, Child Speaker for the day from the Sanskriti School, articulated his mature thoughts on the 70th Republic Day of India in chaste Hindi delivered extempore. “Gantantra Divas” begins with the Prime Minister of India who first lays a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate to pay tribute to the soldiers of the armed forces who laid their life for the motherland.

Flag hoisting at Rajpath on arrival of the president is followed by grand military parades, variety of other events exhibiting country’s rich cultural heritage from different states and cultural dances by school children. His speech reflected nation’s history and the diversity which identifies India as a great unique republic country.

To further raise significance of the event, the children of the DAV Sanskriti School and DAV Montessori School, sang evergreen patriotic song “Insaaf Ki Dagar Pe” that inspire children to take their responsibilities as responsible citizens.

The top listed iconic song “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon” that commemorates to solider laying down his life defending the country received a special applause by audience. Children from the Sanskriti School enthralled the audience with their Indian dance performance based on patriotic themes.

The soulful vibrant dance performances by little kids in colorful attractive attires stole the show. The gathering on this joyous and momentous day pledged together to make nation better and salute their national flag with Jai Hind, Vande Mataram. The culmination of Republic Day celebration saw chanting of Shanti Paath.

There was overall appreciation filled in the air that the little children of the DAV Sanskriti School learn so much about Indian values and culture in mere two hours a week. The gathering moved into the dining hall to enjoy special meal topped by traditional laddoos.

HOUSTON: For over two decades, Martin Luther King Jr. day has been designated as a national day of service, not “a day off, but a day on”. Volunteers across the nation gather every year to spread the true spirits of volunteering and giving back to the community.

So that’s exactly what AYM (Arya Yuva Mandal) students of the Arya Samaj of Greater Houston did. On Monday, January 21st, 2019 (MLK Jr. day), all these youth volunteered at Interfaith Ministries’ ILEAD Youth Day of Service to help spread the spirits of volunteerism by assisting many groups, including but not limited to Meals on Wheels and refugee programs.
Although students of all religions and faiths attended the ILEAD program, there was one shared goal: to work together with everyone else and help better the community. The activities began with an opening speech by the head of IM (Interfaith Ministries), Martin B. Cominsky for Greater Houston.

Students of AYM were then split into four groups along with everyone else: one to make breakfast bags, one to wish happy birthday to those in Meals on Wheels who had birthdays, another to make care packages for refugees, and the last group to make Valentine’s Day cards. Altogether, all the youth split up at the event and carried out variety of service projects, including packaging several hundred meals, prepare care packages, make telephone calls for wellness checks of seniors and cards for over 2,000 refugees.

The event took place over a span of four hours, with all the time devoted to the community service. As hours eventually came to a close, Neeraj Salhotra, an AYM alumni, made concluding remarks about the involvement of the community in public service. ILEAD’s Youth Day of Service was a great success for the youth and the community, enlivening MLK Jr.’s spirit of hope and service to the community. It is with no doubt that we can say that AYM will be back the following year to help in such a great event.

Sunny Day Brings Out Many to Celebrate India’s Republic Day

A scene from the ICC Republic Day celebration

STAFFORD: Blessed with warm temperatures and sunny skies, a stream of people came through the Stafford Civic Centre all afternoon long, till the late evening to participate in the first large community-wide event of the year, India’s Republic Day celebration. One of its two flagship events, the India Culture Center once again held the celebration of the 70th Republic Day with a now familiar setup of booths and stage shows, making it cozy for the regulars who attend and easier on the vendors who go through their often practised paces.

The organizers were likewise heartened by the turnout and especially that people lingered on till the end of the cultural programs which started after 5:30. “Success is sweet, but it’s sweeter when its achieved thorough co-ordination, cooperation, collaboration and teamwork,” said ICC President Nisha Mirani afterwards in thanking her Board and volunteers, and especially the 13 year-old Eesha Dhairyawan who assisted her throughout the day.

The doors opened at 2pm and right after the initial welcome remarks dived into the Mom & Me talent contest organized by Jasmeeta Singh who has often pulled together such shows for the ICC programs. The entries were six teams of moms and their young children performing dances, songs, musical instruments and other routines; all much appreciated by the audience.
Santosh Varma and Ajit Patel (he was dressed in a 70s style retro outfit) had organized an ICC Idol 2019 contest that projected many talented individuals and groups on stage. Other segments featured performers like the much-followed popular Mukhti Band of senior citizens who sat onstage and sang several songs while playing hand cymbals and other instruments.

Charlie Patel, Pramod Bengani and Ajit Patel organized the over 36 booth of vendors lined up in the back of the hall and the front lobby area. Particularly impressive were the large stalls of Unique Arts, a framed pictures vendor, and Archie’s Creations, an artificial jewelry vendor, both of Atlanta, who had setup enormous booths of wares. Two food booths – Tony’s Kitchen and Hot Breads – provided ready-made food for sale.

Dr. Raj Bhalla organized the Community Award Segment, which was held after the formal segment of the national anthems and speeches by ICC, community leaders and local elected officials including Stafford Mayor Leonard Scarcella, the Indian Deputy Consul General Surendra Adhana, Stafford Councilman Ken Mathew, recently elected officials Julie Mathew and Fort Bend County Judge K.P. George. Alice Chen, who is running for Stafford City Council Position 1 in the upcoming May 4 elections, made her rounds among the crowd. Also attending were the Fort Bend County Constable Pct 4 Trever Nehls and his twin brother Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls.

Rajiv Bhavsar and Dr. Falguni Gandhi coordinated the VIP seating and the ICC booth was handled by Hemant Patel, Dr. Sarita Mehta and Swapan Dhariyawan. Darshak and Mona Thakkar of Krishna Sound provide the sound system, Raghu Thakkar of Image n Motions the photography and Asit Patel did additional photo and videography.

The Constitution of India tied together the hitherto fluid borders of the country and gave birth to the ‘sovereign democratic republic’ that we celebrate each year in the most magnificent way.

HOUSTON: Most people who attended the Indian Republic Day reception last Sunday, January 31 probably expected the usual fare of speechmaking, photo ops, light entertainment and a good line up of appetizers. In this, those who came to the event at the Hilton Post Oak hotel, which has become the favored site of the Consulate to mark Indian national events, were not disappointed. What they were not expecting were the major announcements that four separate officials made as they strode up to the podium to say their piece.

Just as last year, the reception emphasized the Make In India campaign, a hallmark of the current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi since he took office May 2014, with the side walls laid out with banners, an LED screen showing videos and posterboard cutouts of the striding lion, both in the lobby and onstage, symbolizing the campaign. After the program, as guests dined, the LED screen played out videos of cabinet ministers explaining India’s goals and advances made in attaining them.

As expected, the usual list of local elected officials, business and industry leaders, arts and culture figures and media were invited to the event held on a Sunday evening, which was a departure from the previous years’ insistence on holding the event on the date of the actual Republic Day, January 26. Among them were newly elected Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner,; Hon. Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX 2nd); Congressman Pete Olson (R-TX 22nd); Harris County Judge Ed Emmett; Houston City Councilmen Mike Laster and Jack Christie; Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis; Jay Guerrero, representing US Senator John Cornyn; Booker T. Morris III representing Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee D-TX 18th and Sam Merchant representing Congressman Al Green D-TX 9th.

Also in attendance were Padma Shri Awardee and founding Chairman of the US India Chamber of Commerce Dallas/FortWorth, Ashok Mago; Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awardee and Chancellor & President of the University of Houston, Dr. Renu Khator; and members of the Consular Corps.

    CG 1in

Indian Consul General Harish began the program by noting that both the Indian and US constitutions begin with the words “We the people …”, grant fundamental rights, and encourage shaping one’s destiny through hard work. He noted the progress that had been made in bi-lateral relations and trade in recent years between the two countries, and the personal goodwill between Modi and US President Barack Obama.

Harish cited his own ability to build strong relationships in the Bayou City during his three and a half years in the city, saying “he and his family had received a warm welcome in Houston.” He noted many accomplishments in Indo-Texas trade during that time: the largest investments by Texas in India and Indian companies in the region; the 6 million tons per annum of LNG, soon-to-be-shipped from Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass export terminal; the trade delegation headed by former Mayor Annise Parker that visited India last year; the International Yoga Day event that drew 3,000 to the George Brown Convention Center last year and the planned visit to India by Turner in 2016/17 heading another trade delegation.

In a departure from his predecessors, Harish used the occasion to announce, to applause and murmurs from the hall, that he had been appointed as Ambassador to Vietnam and expected to leave in the next few months. He later said that he successor will be Anupam Ray, an IFS officer who is currently on scholarly leave on the faculty at the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce of the University of Kentucky and recently was the deputy Coordinator of the BRICs Summit in 2012. Houston has been a jumping-off spot for all previous Consul-Generals to take on an assignment as Ambassador to their next postings.

    CG 4in

This was one of four major announcements that evening. Turner gave his congratulations and spoke of Mahatma Gandhi’s inspiration to Martin Luther King and how that affected him personally. He acknowledged that India had become an important partner to Houston’s economy and his intention to work with the Indian community here. Booker Morris and Sam Merchant said a few words and presented proclamations from Lee and Green.

But it was Ted Poe, known for his country witticisms and habit of shooting from the hip, who made the first surprising announcement. He noted that this was India’s 67th Republic Day and his own 67th birthday too. He joked, that as former judge, he could issue a court order to have Harish “stick around.” He ended by stating “the US needs to establish a more candid relationship with Pakistan. We don’t need to pay them to hate us, – don’t need to send aid to Pakistan … since it is used against us.”

Pete Olson, clad in a sleeveless waistcoat, and favored by Modi, opened by folding his hands and offering a namaste.“ We have no better partner in the world than India,” he carried on, quoting figures for impressive trade growth over the past 15 years. He was impressed by Modi’s recent surprise visit to Pakistan and also echoed Poe’s sentiments of establishing closer ties to India than Pakistan.

Finally, it was Emmett, a long-time enthusiastic admirer of India who has traveled there and has a son who lives in an ashram near Pune, who made the last of the announcements by insisting on four assignments for the Bayou City. He asked for more Indo Americans on Boards and Commissions in the county and city; establishing direct flights between India and Houston; establishing direct shipping routes between Mumbai and Houston and identifying opportunities to share knowledge and technology with India.

A dance presentation by students from the Anjali Performing Arts Center – whose Director Ratna Kumar was recognized – where Harish’s daughter Amani learns classical dance, culminated the program before a deep round of appetizers was served, catered by Udipi restaurant, whose owner Satish Rao was present.
