Ranveer Singh: Born to Play Gully Boy

Story: Murad (Ranveer Singh) must fight off his poverty and social disadvantage to realise his dream of being a rapper. His friends and family rally together to help an ordinary boy in becoming an extraordinary rapper.

Review: There’s a line in the film where the character MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) says, “Agar duniya mein sab comfortable hote toh rap kaun karta?” That’s an insight that comes only from a true fan of this performing art. Director Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Gully Boy’ is the definitive look at the rap scene in India. It chronicles the story of an ordinary boy Murad, from Dharavi, who dreams big and refuses to let adversity squash his spirit. His journey from being the quintessential slumdog to being an ambitious rapper named Gully Boy, is exhilarating and exciting, to say the least. Rap is an unconventional genre of music in India, but even those who don’t necessarily associate with this form of music, will be able appreciate the underdog and heartfelt story.

The story kicks-off in a match-box sized chawl room in Dharavi, where Murad dreams of a better life. He loves the feisty Safeena (Alia Bhatt) just as much he loves to pour his pent up emotions and frustrations onto paper. His life takes a dramatic turn when one day he sees MC Sher aka Shrikant, rap a few college boys to shame, after they’ve booed a girl offstage. Shrikant takes Murad under his wing and together they kick-start a rapper team that’s high on spirit and passion. It’s the classic underdog story, with Murad’s poverty establishing the fact that he’s got very little chance to succeed and no right to harbour big dreams either. Also, his orthodox father Aftab (Vijay Raaz) brings in the quintessential conflicted relationship. While some parts of the film are predictable, what makes ‘Gully Boy’ stand out is the emotional intelligence. Murad’s journey has some fantastic moments that draw you in and keep you hooked. The stellar dialogues by Vijay Maurya add depth to the narrative. The story and screenplay by Reema Kagti and Zoya scores high, has flair and finesse with beautiful touches on the edges. It’s just the kind that raises the tempo of the narrative a notch higher.

The driving force of the film though is the performance by Ranveer Singh. He was born to play this part and the way he raps his soul out in the film, makes it a killer set. He breathes life, despair, euphoria and belief into his role. A line in the film where MC Sher tells Murad says, ‘Tere andar toofan hai’ is bang on. With every new performance, the actor brings in a tidal wave of surprises. Equally brilliant is Alia Bhatt, in a smaller, but deeply impactful role. The actress brings effortless ease into the fiery eccentricities of her character. The chemistry between Ranveer and Alia is cute, lovable and fiery, too. Siddhant Chaturvedi, in his first film, deserves a dab of honor. He’s easily one of the most effortless actors in showbiz. Vijay Varma, Kalki Koechlin and Vijay Raaz are all superb in their respective roles as well.

The music of the film is killer, too. The movie is inspired by the lives of rappers Naezy and Divine, and these Indian artistes, along with a whole host of their contemporaries, have scored a super soundtrack for the film. There’s a reason the film feels legit and that’s down to the fact that real rap artistes worked on this film. The treatment and the visual finesse of the film are at par with anything you’ve seen from Hollywood or anywhere around the world. The rap battles shown in the film are riveting and an inspired piece of writing. The problem with the film though is it’s length, which stretches to two-and-a-half hours, but the emotional deftness and clap-worth dialogues add the right amount of gusto and keep you totally engaged. This is a film that deserves an encore. And in true rap style, let’s just say… yeh Gully Boy hard hai bhai! — Times of India

  • Befikre Movie Review: Ranveer Singh, Vaani Kapoor’s Chemistry Is Middling At Best

Befikre Movie Review: Ranveer Singh, Vaani Kapoor’s Chemistry Is Middling At Best

    befikrereview

A not-so-shudh desi romance, Befikre is posited as an extravagant ode to the adventures of unfettered youth.

The film plays out mostly on touristy locations in the French capital and on sundry dance floors and nightclubs.

But are its pretty frames and foot-tapping songs worth the price of a multiplex ticket? Well, depends entirely on what one is seeking from a weekend watch.

Produced, written and directed by Aditya Chopra, the free-wheeling tale of lust and love gets buried under a crushing bulk of badinage that eventually yields no more than layers of surface gloss: nice to behold but flimsy in the main.

There is no denying that Befikre is beautifully staged and lensed. So, no matter how insubstantial the film is as an exploration of physical passion and its pitfalls, there is no reason to believe that it wouldn’t be crowd-pleasing.

The film ends by exhorting the audience to “kiss free, love free, live free” while it seems to suggest that marriage is akin to jumping off a cliff into the sea.

But not to worry, the message that Befikre transmits is: if love is strong enough, you will float. If it isn’t, you plunge into the unknown. The corollary: “love is life”.

And that takes us right back to the motto of Yash Chopra’s romantic dramas. So, all things considered, Befikre isn’t as radical as might seem at first glance.

  • Ranveer Singh meets onscreen Daddy Anil Kapoor and the nautanki begins

Ranveer Singh meets onscreen Daddy Anil Kapoor and the nautanki begins

The Slumdog Millionaire actor turned 59 today but held a pre-birthday bash and boy was that a crazy celebration! If you have to describe the actor in words, you clearly would run out of synonyms that pertain to sexiness! Even at 59, Anil Kapoor ceases to look hot! And we are so glad for that. In fact, in his recent film, Dil Dhadakne Do, he portrayed Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra’s father and with the sexy grey hair look, he literally floored us! One of the liveliest actors in Bollywood and thanks to his great appreciation to goofiness, the actor has entertained us for a really long time now. And yes, coming back to Anil’s film Dil Dhadakne Do, the actor made a really good rapport with his onscreen son, Ranveer Singh. Even post the film’s release, Ranveer and Anil still bring out the great father-son chemistry that they shared on the sets of DDD.

    643589

Obviously being onscreen daddy dearest’s birthday, Ranveer was bound to have made an appearance to wish him and celebrate with him. But being his goofy self most of the time and finally shedding off the Bajirao avatar, Ranveer and Anil got into a nautanki zone when they met last night! Initially there was a giant hug greeting which soon caught up with a few singing and of course, PDA. Okay, whoever said PDA is only for couples, let me tell you its public display of affection which also takes place between friends and family! Their cute embracing sessions sure took us back to the DDD days and made us happy. And we really hope that the duo come together again and entertain us!

  • Ranveer Singh opens up about his casting couch experience –

Ranveer Singh opens up about his casting couch experience –

    639003

Ranveer Singh is one of Bollywood’s finest actors who has also grown to be a heartthrob. While we love Ranveer’s quirkiness, we also respect the fact that he is very upfront and honest about everything. But yes, before entering the showbiz, even Ranveer Singh has had his share of struggle. The actor, who was initially an assistant director was very well versed with casting and portfolio making but never did he expect that he would fall prey to casting couch in Bollywood. The actor, in an interview with a leading channel, revealed his casting couch experience.

The actor said that he was invited over by a casting director to his house in the late evening and Ranveer, being familiar to the working of casting, made a very fine portfolio of himself which was something the director was not interested in! The Bajirao Mastani actor tagged the casting director as a “highly sleazy gentleman” who didn’t even look at his portfolio. The actor said, “I had worked as an assistant director and I knew that there are no takers for 500-page portfolio. Mine was very impressive and people were intrigued enough to at least take a look at it.”

Ranveer was further advised by the casting director to be smart and sexy to go miles in showbiz. And what came as a shock to the actor was when the director said that he’ll have to be open to take and touch. Well, that was atrociously real! But here’s the funny part. When Ranveer refused to all those demands, the man started to negotiate with him if he can touch or just see it! “Later I got to know what he was interested in. When I said ‘no’, he was heartbroken like a jilted lover,” said the actor. Okay, speechless as I am, it is quite brave of Ranveer to have opened up about this experience of his and when the actor later spoke to some other strugglers, he found out that this sleazeball has made similar propositions to them as well!

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone are hands down the dreamiest couple in Bollywood. They are spotted holidaying together, chilling with each other’s families, doing films together, attending film screenings, basically doing all the lovey-dovey stuff. But we can tell that Ranveer is the one who is absolutely smitten by his girlfriend. Not just her beauty, but Ranveer is also constantly amazed by Deepika’s dedication to her craft and her general awesomeness.

While talking to the Man’s World magazine Ranveer revealed that Deepika is the one who makes him look good in films. Here is what he said, “Deepika is the perfect foil for me as an actor. Her energy contrasts mine, and it makes for great synergy onscreen. She makes me look good. It’s truly commendable that she continues an upward graph in terms of growth in her craft with every film she performs in. Her emotional intelligence is extremely high. She is both sensitive and sensible. She is grounded in spite of all the staggering success she has seen in the past couple of years.”
