Raees movie review: A film where Shah Rukh Khan tries too hard

Raees movie review: Shah Rukh Khan is straining hard to fulfill every single gangster trope but it is Nawazuddin Siddiqui who actually shines through. Shah Rukh Khan returns in and as Raees , a golden hearted mobster who does bad things for a good cause. It is a role constructed to grab back his pole position, and to that end Shah Rukh Khan strains at fulfilling every single point of the In and As trope. He sings and dances, he fights and romances: he also tries to fulfil the outlines of a character.
And that’s where the film gets stuck, between the two stools of restraint and full blown tamasha: the In and As SRK is as familiar as he has ever been, despite the trimmings added on to induce freshness — the gold rimmed glasses, the kohled eyes, the deliberate delivery, and that Scarface moment– guns, arcing bullets and blood– which all actors dream of.

Freaky Ali review: Nawazuddin Siddiqui scores a sixer, not an albatross
In golf, you seldom see albatross. It’s a rare score where the player sinks his ball into the cup ‘three strokes below the par’ (meaning three strokes less than the par score of the hole). Extremely challenging. Yet, if it happens, you never see crowds go crazy with dhols and dance. Why? Well, that happens only on a cricket ground.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, before making the final strike in Freaky Ali, says he will make the final strike with a sixer. And that is exactly what he does—both in and for the film. Sohail Khan’s latest directorial venture brings out an unseen side of the actor we would love to see more.
Freaky Ali is the story of Ali (Siddiqui) who is a salesman at a small undergarments shop and is kicked out of his job just 10 minutes into the film. He takes to extortion before his talent as a golfer is discovered. The journey from a small ‘basti’ to playing in a golf championship is what Khan narrates through his film. It marks several firsts for Siddiqui – playing the main lead in a ‘commercial’ film, his first dance number and his first comedy.
With an actor as versatile as Siddiqui headlining the film, expectations are certainly high. How well does the movie match them?

Nawazuddin Siddiqui with Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Aankhen’ sequel?
Known for portraying complex roles, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has now been approached to play one of the three lead blind characters in a sequel to Aankhen (2002). Interestingly, Nawaz will once again team up with Amitabh Bachchan for the film, with whom he is currently shooting in Kolkata for Sujoy Ghosh’s Te3n.
Sources reveal, “To be directed by Anees Bazmee, barring Amitabh Bachchan, the original cast of the film (Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal and Paresh Rawal) won’t be repeated. While it has been reported that Anil Kapoor and John Abraham have been roped in, Nawaz is the latest to have been approached to join the cast. He has heard the narration and the makers are keen on having him on board. While the story will be new, the three lead characters will remain blind this time around as well.”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui: We Need a Movie Like Bajrangi Bhaijaan
Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who will be seen in the role of a reporter in Bajrangi Bhaijaan said a past experience as a journalist helped him in his character.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan, also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and tracks the story of a speech-impaired girl, lost in India. Salman, a Hanumandevotee, promises to see her home safely, to Pakistan.
“I portray a Pakistani reporter in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The character helps in Salman Khan with his journey,” Mr Siddiqui said.
Talking of his past days as a reporter, he said, “I reached a saturation point in acting, so I wanted to put myself into an uncomfortable zone; I became reporter for a channel. I covered Lok Sabha elections. I did eight to 10 episodes as a reporter.”
Having real life experience in reporting sure comes handy, but the Badlapur actor still made extra efforts.
“It is not a filmy reporter. It is based on real life reporters and it is a Pakistani character, so I have tried to keep as much Urdu words as possible. I’d watched plenty of Pakistani reporters and Indian reporters, whom I knew. We combined them all with the director’s input to create this character,” added Nawazuddin.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan would mark the second collaboration of the Gangs of Wasseypur actor with Salman. They earlier worked together in the superhit movieKick.
“It has very strong content and a very emotional, positive and interesting story. The best part of the film is that it talks about bonding two things, two countries and two hearts. There is so much of negativity spreading through the world, so we need a movie like this,” said the critically acclaimed actor.
