  • Manikarnika: Kangana Ranaut Owns the Period Drama

Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Jisshu Sengupta, Atul Kulkarni, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Ankita Lokhande, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Danny Denzongpa, Richard Keep
Directors: Kangana Ranaut, Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi
Rating: Two and a half stars

Kangana Ranaut in and as Manikarnika, the Queen of Jhansi, delivers exactly what was promised: a high-decibel, high-on-rhetoric hagiography of a queen who fought for her people and her land, till her last breath.
There is not a single complex thought in this nearly three-hour movie, which runs out of steam in the third act because it needs to repeat its battle scenes ad nauseam to fill up the time till the end. It’s all kept deliberately kindergarten-level simple (in some places, even simplistic), linear, first this happened, then this happened, and then. We the viewers have to do no work to get with the movie’s plan: we just have to sit back, go with the flow, flabby and clunky in bits, and admire Ranaut blazing on the screen.
Which she does, with such fierceness and gumption that you cannot take your eyes off her, especially when she is in full stride. She embodies the spirit of a very special young woman married into a ‘rajwada’, to an effeminate princely type (Sengupta), catapulted into the throne, not because she wants it, but because she is the only real man among the men who surround her.
Naturally, no other actor gets as much screen time as her: after a while it looks as if she is in practically every scene, as Manikarnika : The Queen Of Jhansi takes us from the ghats of Manikarnika in Banaras, to Bithoor where Manu’s prowess with words and swords catches the eye of the man (Kharbanda) responsible for her marriage and make-over as Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi.
The filmmakers (with Ranaut getting a co-director credit) have the usual caveat of the film taking creative liberties with the facts. So we don’t really have to worry our heads about whether all the stuff unfolding on screen happened or not.
We are given a glimpse of palace intrigues where a black-hearted cousin (Ayyub) hankers for the throne, as Ranaut’s Laxmi, dripping enough brocade and baubles to sink a thousand thrones, plays the part of wife and mother. It’s all very trying, this prelude to the real act, filled with Ranaut made up to the hilt (did they really have false eyelashes in 1830?) romancing, dancing, singing with ‘sakhis’ in age-old Bollywood style.
The film does make a brief stab at showing us how Laxmi created an army of women (and giving the film its chance to sling in a rousing ‘action’ song as they flash blades and swirl and twirl). Other characters come and go. There’s the faithful Ghaus baba (Denzongpa), Tantya Tope (Kulkarni), and a whole series of bumbling Englishmen, who make the mistake of thinking that Rani will be a weak puppet, just like her neighbouring princes who have keeled over at the slightest hint of British aggression, and are living on their pensions.
The 1857 Mutiny pops up too, and we get a glimpse of the ‘greased cartridges’ and the ‘chhaavni of Meerut’ and the ‘rebel’ armies falling by the wayside.
But we know it’s all window dressing, a backdrop for the Rani to rise, and show us what bravery and valour and patriotism is all about. Ranaut in full battle mode is a sight to behold: harnessed, charged up, tearing and slashing through the rows of ‘dushman’ soldiers, all snarly and bloody. The battle scenes are impressive: lots of ‘josh’ right there.
The film skews, naturally, towards the ruling establishment in its exhortation of what nationalism means (there’s a great Scindia-Gwalior dig in there). A calf is saved from slaughter. Dialogues abound about ‘Bharat Mata’ and its ‘betis’, and a priceless one goes like this: ‘jab beti uth khadi hoti hai toh jeet badi hoti hai’. Claptrap, yes. But also clap clap. — Shubhra Gupta in Indian Express

Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming period drama Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is based on the life of the 19th century queen of Jhansi.

Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming period drama Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is based on the life of the 19th century queen of Jhansi, Lakshmi Bai, a prominent freedom fighter in Indian history. The makers have already clarified that the film is not a biopic but Manikarnika is now facing opposition from Sarva Brahman Mahasabha for alleged “distortion of facts”.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Sarva Brahman Mahasabha president Suresh Mishra held a press conference in Jaipur to address the issue where he also claimed that there are scenes in the film portraying a love affair between Rani of Jhansi and a British man. He said, “We learnt about it from our friends and acquaintances in various parts of Rajasthan where some scenes of the film are being shot. The film is based on a foreigner’s book and tries to dampen the queen’s reputation.” Manikarnika was earlier being shot in Jaipur and Jodhpur.

Gossip mills are abuzz with news of a cold war between Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor while shooting for Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Rangoon’. While the actor claims ‘it’s all good’, Kangy says the only problem she had with Shahid was when they had to share a cottage during the Arunachal Pradesh schedule.

During a recent chat with the firebrand actress, she told us, “We were shooting in a remote location where a little makeshift cottage was erected. Shahid and I were sharing the cottages with our respective teams. Every morning, I would wake up to this mad hip-hop music. And he would exercise listening to crazy trance and techno songs blasting from the speakers. I was fed up and wanted to shift out. Sharing the cottage with Shahid was a nightmare,” she says with a laugh.

Sonam Kapoor on Hrithik Roshan-Kangana Ranaut spat: I am impressed with the way she handled the situation!

    collage_sonam_kangana_650_042814024008

Yesterday, Vidya Balan was very vocal about her support for Kangana Ranaut in her legal fight with Hrithik Roshan. She found it extremely commendable that the actress took a stand for herself because most of the time women do it for near and dear one but not for themselves. She is the first one to openly say what she felt about the actress without commenting anything about the matter as such. And now even Sonam Kapoor admires Kangana‘s stand.

While talking to India Today, Sonam reacted to the legal spat saying, “I did see her interview, I think she is pretty cool. But I don’t know what was going on between Hrithik and Kangana. What happens between two people nobody will ever know. I have grown up with Hrithik and I know the kind of person he is. He is an incredible human being, he is sensitive, he is charitable and kind. I have worked with him. When you grow up with someone, you think the best of them. Having said that, women are persecuted a lot in this country. So as a woman, I would want to support another woman. But as I said, Hrithik is a friend of mine and me being a feminist and a woman. I am torn. I wish I could give an opinion on this since I am known to give an opinion, I honestly don’t know how to answer this question.”

Hrithik misused my client’s private mails and photos: Kangana’s lawyer

    _19320278-fcba-11e5-b2cb-21770897bf70

Rizwan Siddiquee, Kangana Ranaut’s lawyer, has accused Hrithik Roshan of misusing his client’s private e-mails and photographs.

“My client’s absolutely private and confidential emails and photographs are being misused by Hrithik Roshan,” Siddique said.

He also accused Roshan of threatening the actress.

The legal fight between the two stars, who worked together in Kites and Krrish 3, has been in the headlines for some time now.

Hrithik, on his part, said he never had a relationship with the actress. He accused Ranaut of sending up to 50 e-mails a day, some explicit, while Kangana alleged that Hrithik had hacked into her e-mail account to delete mails that could have complicated his divorce proceedings with his ex-wife Suzanne Khan.

Aamir Khan and Kangana Ranaut attend PM Narendra Modi’s private dinner!

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, who was at the centre of a controversy over his comments on intolerance, attended a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last night. Besides Aamir, actress Kangana Ranaut was also invited at the private dinner held in Turf Club where top politicians, diplomats from several countries and industry leaders were in attendance. The high-profile event, which was a strict no-media affair, was organised after Modi launched the mega Make in India (MII) week here earlier yesterday.

Wading into the “intolerance” debate, the “Ghajini” star had kicked up a controversy last year by saying he has been “alarmed” by a number of incidents and his wife Kiran Rao even suggested that they should probably leave India. His comments evoked sharp criticism from ruling BJP and also the NDA government. Later, the 50-year-old actor’s contract as brand ambassador for the government’s Incredible India campaign was not renewed by the Tourism Ministry.

  • Kangana Ranaut spills details about her upcoming Rani Lakshmibai biopic and Rangoon!

Kangana Ranaut spills details about her upcoming Rani Lakshmibai biopic and Rangoon!

    592395

Her stupendous portrayal of an under-confident Rani in “Queen” won her not just a Best Actress National Film Award, but also earned her the epithet of Bollywood’s ‘Queen’. But Kangana Ranaut finds it “funny”.
“This ‘Queen’ of Bollywood tag is quite funny! Now I’m playing Rani Lakshmibai. So after that film, people will write on my grave ‘Rani Lakshmibai died here’,” Kangana quipped during a chat with IANS here.

The acclaimed actress, who has carved her niche in the Hindi film industry with power-packed women-centric roles in movies like “Gangster – A Love Story”, “Fashion” and “Tanu Weds Manu”, says her life can be clearly divided into a “pre-‘Queen’ and post-‘Queen’” eras. “If there’s a biopic on me, it will be pre-‘Queen’ and post-‘Queen’… pre-‘Queen’ was a different world — black and white — and after ‘Queen’, my world has become colourful, because I’m getting a lot of offers that I think I deserve and I always thought I deserve, but would have never got,” said the actress, who’s known for being outspoken.

Now, she says “I’m as good as it can get”.

She will prove her mettle once again in one of her new roles in Rani Lakshmibai, which will be based on the Rani of Jhansi, one of the leaders of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The film will be directed by Ketan Mehta.

Besides Rani Lakshmibai, Kangana, who will next be seen in Katti Batti, also has films like Hansal Mehta’s Simran and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon in her kitty.

In Rangoon, which is set in the 1940s, the 28-year-old will sport a vintage look.

“We have done a few look tests, but we haven’t decided yet about my hairstyle. It will be more of a vintage hairstyle as the film is set in the 1940s. I love vintage stuff. We’re still zeroing down one look,” she said.

Apart from that, Kangana is also in talks for another film, which she says has a “musical” story.

“I have just signed these three films – Rani LakshmibaiRangoon and Simran. But now there is one another musical, which I might start. It’s a musical film about circus and the script sounds very exciting, but I’ll announce it once it’s finalised,” Kangana said.

  • I Love NY review: Kangana Ranaut doesn’t disappoint, again

I Love NY review: Kangana Ranaut doesn’t disappoint, again

    NY4

There were reports that Kangana Ranaut didn’t want I Love NY (New Year) to be released, but now after watching the film, it seems her worries were mostly fictional. In fact, she is the one you’ll notice the most in the film, and she doesn’t disappoint either. I Love NY is much better than its run-of-the-mill trailers, but how good is actually good enough? Let’s find out.

The film starts with a commentary in Randhir Singh’s (Sunny Deol) voice which is basically an exercise to make the ‘desi’ audience familiar with the popular American outlook. It’s just that the film has been released after being canned for some years and thus the Indian viewers have become used to such cultural and behavioural differences via other Hindi films.

Anyway, we get to know that our guy Randhir is a hard working, coffee drinking guy whose last marriage proposal was dated 10 years ago, and now he is gathering courage to pop-up the same question to his current girlfriend Riya (Tannishtha).

The really long gap between the two proposals is necessary otherwise how will the filmmakers justify a 57-year-old hero to the Indian audience? Of course, pun intended. He chooses the New Year Eve to get the long pending work done, but a series of mistakes and coincidences brings him to New York (you get the NY drift?), where he meets a school teacher Tikku Verma (Kangana Ranaut), described as the president of unlucky club by her boyfriend Ishaan (Navin Chowdhary). This ‘chance’ encounter is the actual beginning of a story which can at least boast of sensible dialogues.

    NY2

A basic initiation is needed before we delve deeper into the nitty-gritties of a ‘why did you happen to me’ sort of tale in New York. In case, you don’t have any direct reference to American pop culture then you can also consider Friends as a source of information. There things like handing over the keys of your apartment to somebody you’re dating is considered as the penultimate step towards getting married. In a nutshell, New York is a city which is a great mixture of traditional and modern. In such a city, Ishaan finds a ‘gharelu ladki’ who he accuses of being the ‘titli’ type.

A girl who wants to be happy even at the darkest point of her life is at the helm of affairs, but her back-story has been presented in a very ordinary way. Tikku’s Monica-like apartment may hint towards a modern outlook, but the letters from her dead father which she keeps reading at every possible opportunity present her as the conscience keeper of the semi-urban Indian women.

    NY1

But, there’s a tinge of a feminist in her character which manages to make Tikku Verma a girl to root for. The directors (Radhika and Vinay) have taken the utmost care in representing their characters in the typical western way which brings a sense of equality between opposite genders.
