  • ‘Life After’ Seminar Presents Strategies for Sustainable Income in Retirement

‘Life After’ Seminar Presents Strategies for Sustainable Income in Retirement

    BY PRAMOD KULKARNI

Participants in the India House/SOS “Life After” seminar were Vipin Kumar (left), Mani Subramanian, Jaya Mittakanti, A.J. John, Anasuya Kabad, Mohan Kuruvilla, Randhir Sahni and Atma Ram.

HOUSTON: Among the major milestones in one’s life is retirement. Most retirees and soon-to-be Retiree’s desire to live a healthy and comfortable retired life, travel to exotic places on their bucket list, and spend quality time with family and friends. However, it is natural to feel anxious of whether their life savings will outlast theirs and their spouse’s lives and whether they are able to leave some legacy. This anxiety is exacerbated by the increasing turbulence in the geopolitical environment and the information overload from the internet economy.

Share Our Secrets (SOS), in partnership with India House, organized a free educational program, which provided suggestions on how retirees and soon-to-be retirees may achieve some of their retirement goals.

About 200 people attended the fifth in the series of “Life After” seminars: “Sustainable Income Stream for Retirement” on Sunday, June 9, 2019 from 4 to 6:30 pm at India House.
Share Our Secrets (SOS) coordinator Atma Ram welcomed the gathering and provided a background on SOS. Ram described how SOS is an educational organization, which conducts a gamut of programs for educated young people to teach them skills that are not taught in college curriculums and enabling them to succeed in their careers. SOS also conducts various community outreach events, on topics of interest to Houstonians, and specifically for seniors that could benefit them in their retired lives.

Following Atma Ram, Col. Vipin Kumar (retired), Executive India House, explained how India House is a community center, which provides a myriad of services and activities, either free or at a highly discounted price, including Charity Clinic, Sareen Clinic, Yoga, Meditation, After School, Technology Classes for Seniors, Vedanta Study, Hindi Language, Sanskrit Language, Legal Consultations, Dance Classes, Cricket and informative/ educational seminars. India House, in partnership with Food Bank of Houston, has recently started a program to distribute food to disadvantaged members of the community.

Retirement planning experts, who participated in the seminar, included A. J. John, an insurance executive with Wheatstone LLC, who served as the emcee. The keynote speaker was Dr. Mohan Kuruvilla, Senior Professor of Practice at the University of Houston Bauer College of Business and current President of the Houston CPA Society.
Participants in the Q&A portion with Dr. Kuruvilla were Anasuya Kabad, CFP® from Jaykay Wealth Advisors Inc, and Randhir Sanhi, a well known architect as well as a financial planner. Representing the financial planning consumer was Jaya Mittakanti, a retired business owner.

Emcee A.J. John urged the audience not to depend on social security as their main source of income. “There is no magic formula. You have to look at your sources of income and build savings and investments for retirement and look upon social security as an income supplement.”

Dr. Kuruvilla presented a series of topics that prepped the audience for the panel discussion. “Retirement is expensive,” Dr. Kuruvilla explained at the outset. “We have to preserve our investments and make them grow. We also have to keep in mind how to maintain that income stream for our spouse. And don’t forget Uncle Sam. Taxes are going to be with you right to the grave.”

Financial Planner Randhir Sahni, said “You need to know your assets — what you have, where you have them and what return each asset is earning. The key is compounding your assets over time and getting a better growth rate.”

Mrs. Mittakanti said, “While we were working and raising our children, it was difficult to focus on retirement planning. In my 40s, we decided to invest in instruments such as IRAs and REITS through the advice of a financial advisor.”

Ms. Kabad said that in her firm’s financial practice we make sure to find out from our clients what is important to them regarding money. “It is not just sufficient money for comfortable day-to-day living, but it is about crossing items off your bucket list such as travel, spending time with family and friends, and even donating funds to a charity.”
Over a period of 20 minutes, the panelists answered many specific questions relating to various financial instruments such as annuities and IRAs, particularly conversion of conventional IRAs to Roth IRAs which are not subject to minimum required distribution after age 70.5.

In conclusion, Atma Ram urged the audience to provide feedback on the seminar so that the organizers could design future “Life After” seminars to suit the needs of the attendees.
A feedback survey link was sent out to all seminar participants. Any other feedback, suggestions, and offers to support the outreach educational programs can also be sent to sosoutreachteam@gmail.com.

  • Un-biased Analysis of India’s 2019 General Elections by Dr. Milan Vaishnav

Un-biased Analysis of India’s 2019 General Elections by Dr. Milan Vaishnav

FIS board members gathered for a group photo with Dr. Milan Vaishnav (second from left).

HOUSTON: On March 30, 2019, members of Houston’s Indian community gathered at India House for a lecture on Indian politics and the upcoming general elections, organized by Foundation for India Studies. The lecture, presented by Dr. Milan Vaishnav, head of South Asian Studies at the Carnegie Institute for International Peace, Washington,D.C, and a former Houstonian, was titled “India’s 2019 General Elections: Money, Muscle, and Democracy’s Future.”

The event, which started and ended on time was emceed by FIS Director Nischay Bhan. It began with a welcome address by Krishna Vavilala, FIS’s founder and chairman. Mr. Vavilala provided a brief history of FIS and its numerous achievements during the past 13 years. He said, FIS presents a neutral platform to discuss all issues concerning India without taking sides.
He cited the recent Distinguished Lectures provided to the community including those by Gilad Katz and Anupam Ray the CGs of Israel and India, Santosh Hegde, Justice of the Indian Supreme Court, and various Professors and dignitaries. Dr. Vaishnav is the newest among FIS’s distinguished lecturers. After Mr. Vavilala’s presentation, Mr. Bhan introduced Dr. Vaishnav who proceeded to give a spirited, intelligent, thought provoking and occasionally light-hearted lecture on the state of India’s democracy.

Dr. Vaishnav’s lecture primarily focused on issues of entrenched power, money and corruption in Indian politics. He aimed to analyze the “hawah” around the general elections, and to approximate scenarios for the general election based on several important criteria.

One of the issues Dr. Vaishnav discussed in detail was the Congress Party’s recent success in the “Hindi-belt” and their successes in states historically dominated by BJP. He sought to explain whether the results of that success would translate to the general election. He also analyzed the successes and failures of both BJP and Congress’s attempts to navigate alliances and coalitions.
He looked into the impact of money power in current Indian politics and noted that wealthy Indians make up the vast majority of the Lok Sabha. He also provided an incisive look into the recent foreign policy issues at India’s border with Pakistan, PM Modi’s military action, and the impact of having a strong centralized leader on the future of Indian democracy.

FIS board member Raj Bhalla (center) presents a momento to Dr. Vaishnav with FIS Director Nischay Bhan and FIS founder and chairman, Krishna Vavilala.

Ultimately, Dr. Vaishnav concluded, based on his analysis of the factors he had examined, that PM Modi was likely to remain in power, but with less seats for BJP than in prior years. This was consistent with his analysis of both parties’ relative strengths and weaknesses, and the positions they had taken on many issues.

A lively interactive Q & A session followed Dr. Vaishnav’s lecture which was ably moderated by Nish Bhan who was

also the emcee for the program. Dr. Vaishnav was asked several difficult questions about Indian politics. These included questions regarding India and Kashmir, the efficacy of a two-party system in India, and his vision for India in fifty years.

India House/SOS Life-After Series: Seminar Reveals Role of Insurance for Seniors in Retirement

Principals at the seminar were Insurance Advisor A.J. John, moderator Anasuya Kabad, CFP®; Attorney Benecia Flores and SOS Founder Ranvir “Biki” Mohindra.

    BY PRAMOD KULKARNI

HOUSTON: India House and Share Our Secrets Organization (SOS.ORG) conducted a free seminar on one of the most vexing issues faced by the retired and elderly. The seminar was held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at the India House.

Seniors, often, do not realize the gaps that exist in their retirement plans that could threaten a comfortable retired lifestyle. For example, as seniors face health issues, they may be relying on long-term care and assisted living, which can be a significant drain on their asset pool. In order to mitigate these risks and meet their evolving needs, seniors are exploring various insurance options. The primary purpose of this seminar was to discuss how life insurance, long-term care insurance, and medical insurance can be used to fill the gaps during one’s retirement.

SOS Outreach Coordinator Atma Ram welcomed the audience of seniors and, as a stand-in for Col. Vipin Kumar (retired), Executive Director of India House, introduced a video describing the various activities underway at India House. He also described the activities of SOS, a task typically undertaken by Mani Subramanian, another SOS Outreach Coordinator.
Anasuya Kabad, Certified Financial Planner, introduced the three expert panelists and then served as the moderator during the Q&A session. The panelists were Attorney Benecia Flores, Insurance Advisor A. J. John, and SOS Founder Biki Mohindra.

An estate planning attorney specializing in elderly care, and families with special needs children, Ms. Flores explained the intricacies of the Medicare and Medicaid health care programs. She said that it is a common misconception among the seniors that Medicare would cover their long-term care costs. “That is not so. I help families that have not planned to pay for long-term care possibly through the Medicaid program.”

According to Flores, Medicare provides healthcare benefits for retirees who have paid into the Social Security system for at least 40 quarters. Medicare covers nursing care for only the short term. Medicaid is a need based program and covers long-term care only if the retiree is indigent.

Insurance Advisor A.J. John explained how many insurance carriers have dropped their traditional long-term care policies because of the rising cost of elderly care. John suggested that a new type of a “hybrid” insurance policy might be an option because it provides the options of either long-term care benefits or insurance benefit for your beneficiaries, if the long-term care benefit is not either used at all or used on a limited basis.

The attendees discovered that the huddle sessions were popular to get answers to specific questions in small setting.

Speaking as an insurance consumer, SOS Founder Biki Mohindra presented a chart to show how much one needs to retire comfortably, based on various income levels. He also stressed the importance of getting professional help to solve your insurance-related problems as early as possible. “If you use these professionals when you don’t have a problem, it will cost you $0.10. If you wait until you have a problem, it will cost you a $1. Still, if you wait until the problem gets acute, the cost will escalate to $10.00.”

As in previous seminars, the event concluded with a Q&A session and then small group-huddle sessions, which allowed the attendees to raise more specific questions with the panelists.
The organizers and panelists explained that the information presented was for educational and informational purposes only. They said the information presented should enable the individuals to review their respective situation with their family and develop the most suitable strategy and plan.

The organizers’ plan for the rest of 2019 is to hold three additional seminars on major topics, and deep dive hands-on workshops between those seminars. A follow up workshop is planned to be held on Tuesday, March 12 at India House from 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM to address specific questions on long-term care insurance and life insurance The organizers appreciate receiving input on topics for future seminars and hands-on workshops that can be held between these seminars. All input, including interest in attending the March 12th workshop, can be e-mailed to sosoutreachteam@gmail.com.

HOUSTON: “Too many lives have been lost. Enough is enough.” With these words, Col. Raj Bhalla summed up the sentiment at the prayer service held at India House on February 20 for the 44 CRPF personnel killed in a terror attack in Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir.

The names of the martyred soldiers were read out during a somber candlelight service while the gathering observed a minute silence in prayer for their souls.
“Shahido ko Shat Naman.” President of India Culture Center Nisha Mirani saluted the brave sons of India and in a voice tight with emotion stated “India can fight back and will fight back.”
India’s Deputy Consul General of Houston Surendra Adhana read out Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on the terror attack and the message of condolence from the White House.
Col. Bhalla, who served in the Indian army for 20 years before moving to the US, clearly touched a nerve when he spoke of the “fire that was burning in every Indian’s heart” at this “evil dastardly act.”

An admirer of Mahatma Gandhi, Col. Bhalla disagreed with his quote “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind,” in this case, because “when tyranny crosses all limits, stern action must be taken whether the world becomes blind or not.”

Confrontation ensued at protests held in front of Pakistan’s consulate by more than 200 people from the Indian subcontinent on Saturday, Feb. 22. Photo credit: N-TV.

Composing himself as tears fell, he highlighted the need for abolition of Article 370 of the Indian constitution and stated that it “is about time J & K should be open like any other state… new industries and employment will come to the state and there will be progress and development in every field.”

He also called for a media source to counter the misinformation and fake news being perpetuated by radio stations run by Pakistani Americans.

The prayer service drew over 300 Indian Americans and representatives of elected officials like Jay Guerrero from Senator John Cornyn’s office, Sam Merchant from Congressman Al Green’s office, Jason Fuller from Senator Ted Cruz’s office, Xavier Herrera from County Judge K.P George’s office and Regina Recino from Congressman Dan Crenshaw’s office who all expressed their “solidarity with India.”

Leaders of various Indo American organizations also voiced their abhorrence at this act of terrorism.

IAPAC President Hasu Patel, spoke of “not allowing our resolve to weaken.” IACCGH Executive Director Jagdip Ahluwalia drew attention to the names of the jawans on the banner where you “realize the diversity of India… the prosperous India that these terrorists cannot accept.”

Somansh Agarwal of HGH observed that the soldiers demonstrated the highest level of the selflessness that the Bhagwat Gita speaks of, IMAGH representative Latafath Hussain called for India to “give such a reply that every would-be terrorist would think a 100 times before committing such an act.” IACF’s representative also spoke of “rising above just condemning the act and taking a strong stance.’ Earlier, two patriotic songs were rendered beautifully by Smriti Srivastava accompanied by Govind Shetty on the tabla.

Speaking from a personal perspective having served in Kashmir for three years, Executive Director of India House Col. Vipin Kumar cited a chronology of recent terror attacks and concluded with the question on everyone’s mind -“When will this stop?”

    By Pramod Kulkarni

HOUSTON: After emigrating to the United States, many of us are so focused on getting a graduate education and building a career that we  often lose sight of what comes after retirement and life after the loss of a spouse.

To address these concerns, SOS (Share Our Secrets) Outreach, in a strategic partnership with India House, have collaborated to present a series of seminars grouped under the theme, “Life After”. Behind the scenes, the SOS Outreach Team consists of Mani Subramanian and Atma Ram with Amit Patil as the volunteer coordinator..

Two seminars were presented on the how to handle the emotional, physical and financial impacts after the loss of a spouse. During these previous seminars, the attendees had identified Estate Planning as a topic that has vexed the seniors. Acting upon this suggestion, the third “Life After” seminar was presented on Sunday, October 7 afternoon at India House. The seminar covered estate planning, wills, trusts, and probate.

Eager to learn about such complex financial instruments, seniors attended in record numbers (over 300) to hear presentations on the subject of estate planning and probate from two expert lawyers, followed by a talk on the challenges of retirement and the legacy aspects of selling properties outside the US, particularly in India. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion and a Q&A session.

The attendees enjoyed hot tea and samosas in the hallway and settled in to hear India House Executive Director Col. (retired) Vipin Kumar describe the extensive range of community services available at India House from charity clinics to yoga classes, after-school care and free food distribution to needy families (to learn more, visit).

    300 people at India House.

Insurance Executive A.J. John, Principal, Wheatstone, served as the emcee for the seminar. John thanked India House and introduced the speakers. The first expert speaker was Russell Hall, who is the principal partner of Russell W. Hall & Associates PC, from Bellaire, Texas. Hall presented a checklist of “what estate planning should look like from your perspective.”

“Estate planning is not a form,” Hall explained. “I look at my assets, fiduciaries, etc. every year and update the information as needed. It is also important to discuss these matters with your children. Know your capabilities and listen to your CPA and financial planner. Make a will and then, can you find it and can your family find it? Medical directives and medical power of attorney are also important before disability occurs. When my wife opens up the safe deposit box after me, she will find a balance sheet, a cash flow statement, and all of my passwords.”
The second expert was Stephen Mendel, principal of The Mendel Law Firm LP, based in west Houston. Mr. Mendel discussed probate planning. “Are you going to be a champ or chump?” asked Mendel. “Champs plan. For chumps of the world, the state of Texas has a probate plan, but you won’t like it.”

“A quality estate plan is easy to probate,” Mendel continued. “The court needs the original will with an application to designate the heirs, followed by a hearing, to admit the will for probate and appoint the executor. We then work with the executor to pay off the listed liabilities, including taxes, and distribute net assets according to your will. It’s your responsibility to do it right and take care of your family now and beyond.”
SOS Founder Biki Mohindra discussed the major challenges faced by retirees and described the topics for future seminars. He discussed the intricacies of sale of an asset in India and the legal requirements due to reciprocal tax treaty between India and the U.S. He also elaborated on how this can be leveraged to get tax refund in the U.S. when selling inherited real estate property in India.

The expert presentations were followed by a Q&A session that was managed by JayKay Wealth Advisors’ Anasuya Kabad. Anasuya did  an admirable job of organizing the many questions from the audience succinctly for the three panelists.

The seminar concluded with small group huddle sessions with the panelist and Mr. A. J. John that allowed the attendees to ask specific questions..

Houston Celebrates 11th Annual Rath Yatra

    OCC01_IN

HOUSTON: Houstonians celebrated the annual Rath Yatra on July 14, the very same day when it was also celebrated in Puri, India with pomp and gaiety. Rath Yatra is the celebration of devotion, universal brotherhood, cultural diversity and spiritual bonhomie and that is what was exhibited at India House on the sunny Texas summer day. Orissa Culture Center (OCC) in collaboration with Shri Sitaram Foundation has been organizing Rath Yatra since 2008 and this is the 11th year running. This particular year is special as the Rath Yatra was supported and promoted by City of Houston and Houston Arts Alliance.

OCC02_INIndia House was decorated and decked up since the night before, with volunteers working in synergy up until the very day to have everything ready for Rath Yatra.

    OCC03_IN

Traditionally, the build-up for Rath Yatra starts on Akshaya Tritiya, in the last week of April, and that is exactly when the Houston Odia community led by OCC began the activities for Jagannatha Rath Yatra. Like the previous years, Houston Rath Yatra was a daylong event beginning with traditional ‘puja-archana’ which involved havan and puja dedicated to Shri Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Shri Jagannatha. The customary ‘Chhappan Bhoga’, which includes 56 Odia delicacies, was offered to the deities along with the prayers for individual and global peace. Concurrently in the morning, free community health and dental fair was offered as part of the daylong festivity.OCC04_IN

Following the scrumptious after-noon ‘Maha Prasad’, there was a lull for an hour where the deities were rested and volunteers prepared for the big event. As the evening approached a host of cultural activities kicked off the second part of the daylong Rath Yatra. Celebrating the core message of Universalism, the evening culturals had a rich mix of dance forms like Mariachi Ore De (Houston Mariachi Band), Colombian Folkoric Dance (Colombian Folk Dance Troupe) along with the traditional Indian dance forms like Bharatnatyam and Odissi. Bharatnatyam by Abhinaya School of Dance showcased ‘Amba Stuti’ whereas two forms of ‘Mangalacharan’ – Ganesha Bandana and Rama Bandana were rendered in Odissi by Odissi Academy of Houston and Kalangan School of Odissi. Even the contemporary Bollywood dance form made its presence felt with a devotional dance performance. The fabulous dance performances were topped off with Vedic sukta-ucharan done by priests from various Hindu temples of our vibrant Houston city.

By now India House was beaming with people from all walks of life, in all shapes and sizes, beating the heat to drench themselves in high-octane spiritual experience, in anticipation of the chariot-pulling. The procession of deities or the pahandi started with the eldest in the family, Shri Balabhadra, which was followed by Devi Subhadra and finally Shri Jagannatha. The pahandi of each deity was associated with high-energy ecstatic dance and music, which reached its crescendo when Shri Jagannatha or known fondly as ‘Kalia’ made way to the Chariot. Before the Chariot could roll the ceremonial sweeping or the Chhera Pahanra, where traditionally the King of Odisha or the Gajapati sweeps the Chariots was emulated by anointing a prominent member of the community. The Chariot powered by devotion made a big parikrama around the India House and made its way back to be greeted by representatives from various religious and spiritual organizations of Greater Houston area. As the sun was setting with the sanguine hue in the sky, the ‘Samuhika Maha Aarti’ was performed which was followed by personal darshan, thus bringing close to yet another eventful and fulfilling Rath Yatra.

OCC06_INThe Houston Odia communities led by Orissa Culture Center (OCC) is blessed to be able to organize Houston Rath Yatra and are thankful of City of Houston for their generosity and co-operation without which event of such scale would certainly be a herculean task. We sincerely thank all the spiritual organizations of Greater Houston for the moral support and participation in making Rath Yatra truly an international event. Finally we would like to thank India House for being an accommodative host and Darshak Thacker for managing the audio tech beautifully.

With the success and blessing of this year’s Rath Yatra we look forward to re-create the same synergy in 2019. Jai Jagannath!!

Panelists at the “Life After: Loss of a Spouse) included Ranvir “Biki” Mohindra (SOS), Kumari Susarla (IACAN), Tupil Narasiman (IACCGH) and Andrew Hardwick (Social Security Administration).

HOUSTON: Losing a spouse can be one of the most difficult times in one’s life. To make this transition a bit easier, it is helpful to know what needs to be done in advance and to understand the process for moving forward. With this goal in mind, India House, Share Our Secrets (SOS), Indian American Cancer Network (IACAN) and the Indo American Chamber of Commerce (IACCGH) hosted a panel session “Life After: Loss of a Spouse” on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at India House, with a record audience of over 200 people.

Due to popular demand, this was the second time that the four organizations conducted a program on this topic, and it was just as successful as the first seminar conducted in October 2017. India House and SOS have now entered into a strategic relationship to bring more such educational seminars to the community in collaboration with subject matter experts and other community organizations.

The two-hour program was full of practical tips and steps for spouses to take before the passing of a spouse, right after the death of a spouse, and also on how to transition to a new lifestyle. The program hosted a panel of speakers from different backgrounds and was emceed by Dr. Anu Rao, ex-member IACAN Board.

First, Kumari Susarla, former president of IACAN, spoke on her experience after losing her husband. She was appreciative of the steps her husband took before his death such as preparing a spreadsheet to monitor financial status, setting up automatic bill pay and becoming familiar with logging into various bank accounts and investment accounts. Next, Andrew Hardwick from the Social Security Administration informed the audience of Social Security spousal and survivor benefits.

Tupil Narasiman, CPA and member of IACCGH, followed Mr. Hardwick and laid out the steps people can take yesterday, today, and tomorrow to prepare financially for this major life event, e.g., having proper estate planning documents, listing out all assets and liabilities.

The “Life After: Loss of a Spouse” seminar attracted a record audience at India House. Additional seminars on such educational topics are in the pipeline at India House.

In conclusion, Biki Mohindra, SOS founder, advised the group on practical steps in six areas: daily routine, financial matters, governmental issues (taxes), insurance, emotional issues, and health issues. As Mr. Mohindra mentioned from seeing his mother’s experience, losing a spouse can be very difficult, but it is possible to make a healthy adjustment, if one has a positive outlook. The program ended with a lively Q&A session and introduction of upcoming programs.

Given the success of such programs, SOS is working with other community organizations to organize additional educational events specifically for seniors similar to the “Loss of a Spouse” event, on various aspects of  “Life After” major events. Many of these issues are not taught at a university or through a college curriculum. For example, seminar topics could include financial literacy (social security, investing, and estate planning), health issues (planning for long-term care, medicare, etc.), and other topics important to seniors (staying connected with the next generation, charity and volunteering, etc). SOS is also planning to create new and thoughtful structures and groups for widows and widowers to help them to lead a full and fruitful life after the loss of a spouse.

SOS hopes to play the role of a catalyst and educational agency for future such events with India House as the focal point.

Organizations and community members interested in providing input on possible topics, and participating or helping with planning/organizing these efforts are encouraged to contact Atma Ram (atma.ram1@gmail.com) or Mani Subramanian kohur@aol.com.
