London: British newspapers declared Andy Murray was on top of the world as they ecstatically hailed Great Britain’s Davis Cup victory.

Britain won the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years in Ghent on Sunday when Murray defeated David Goffin 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 to take an unbeatable 3-1 lead over Belgium.

“British tennis, for so long the punchline to gags about national sporting ineptitude, has recovered its pride,” wrote Kevin Mitchell in the Guardian.

“It is some journey from laughing stock to No 1,” said the Times’ Matt Dickinson.

The win over Goffin made Murray just the third player, after John McEnroe and Mats Wilander, to win all eight singles in the same calendar year since the Davis Cup World Group started in 1981.

And it underpinned Murray’s place in tennis history following his headline-making wins in the 2012 US Open and Olympics, and at Wimbledon the following year.

“Murray now further aligns himself with the fellow greats of the modern game, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, who have all won the premier team competition,” said the Daily Mail’s Mike Dickson.

While much of the adulation focused on Murray, a few pundits were careful to heap praise on Britain’s Davis Cup team, which included Murray’s brother, Jamie.

“Murray’s individual contribution has been immense, but he has headlined a team effort that has been five years in the making,” said the BBC’s tennis correspondent Russell Fuller.

“Strategy and team spirit have been expertly co-ordinated by captain Leon Smith, and many other players have won crucial points in the climb through the divisions,” he added.

However, most pundits credited Murray with clinching the title.

The world number three handed his side an unassailable 3-1 lead in their World Group semi-final clash against Australia following his 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Bernard Tomic in the first reverse singles rubber on Sunday.

Britain’s Dan Evans lost 7-5, 6-4 to Thanasi Kokkinakis in the final rubber. Britain will now face an away trip to take on Belgium in the final, due to played between November 27-29, after they defeated Argentina 3-2 in the second semi-final tie.

Murray won both singles’ matches and the doubles with brother Jamie as he played on three successive days to secure a first victory over old rivals Australia since 1978.

But the 28-year-old revealed that a back injury sustained in training last Tuesday had been a cause for concern throughout the tie.

“My back had been giving me a lot of trouble this weekend and for a few days before the tie as well,” Murray said.

“The previous issues I’ve had with my back have been completely different. My back was fine during the US Open and all through that stretch. I took five days off and started practising again. On Tuesday night, once I had finished practising and had cooled down, my back was extremely sore and it got progressively worse over the next couple of days.

“I didn’t feel it when I was playing on the Tuesday so I don’t know exactly what happened. Sometimes after you have played a lot of tennis and then you do take a break the muscles and everything stiffen up and you can have some issues.”

    First title since 1936

It puts nine-time winners Britain, on the verge of relegation to Zone Group III five years ago, a step closer to an historic first title triumph since 1936.

Murray is now looking to become only the fourth player ever to win the Davis Cup, Olympic gold and multiple Grand Slams.

Andy Murray has swapped places with Rafael Nadal to move to third in the ATP world rankings.

The Scot, 27, climbed to his highest ranking since occupying second place after beating Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the 2013 Wimbledon final.

He had dropped to 12th in September 2014 after missing three months following back surgery on a long-standing disc injury the previous year.

Murray plays in Dubai this week along with Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Second seed Federer opened with a 6-3 6-1 win over Mikhail Youzhny on Monday, with top seed Djokovic facing Vasek Pospisil and Murray taking on Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller at 12:00 GMT on Tuesday.
