HOUSTON: AAPI Victory Fund brought New Jersey Democratic Sen. Andy Kim to Houston for a weekend of events on September 12 and 13 to highlight culture, civic participation and the political influence of Asian American and Pacific Islander voters across Texas.
Kim, who is 44, won the 2024 general election to become the first Korean-American in the Senate and the first Asian-American U.S. senator from New Jersey. A former diplomat, Kim is a progressive Democrat, who served from 2019 to 2024 as the U.S. representative from New Jersey’s 3rd congressional district.
Kim worked as a civilian advisor at the United States Department of State in Afghanistan during the Obama administration. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2018, defeating incumbent Tom MacArthur.
His swing through Houston took him to Chinatown and Little Saigon on the west side to taste Vietnamese barbecue, hear immigrant stories and to a gathering of local digital voices and a Sharpstown blockwalk focused on issues affecting working families.
On Sunday, September 13, Kim had a Creator Matcha Meetup at Êmm Café, 6795 Wilcrest
Dr. with Houston-area creators. He then went on a Listening Tour and met with state Rep. Lauren Ashley Simmons, Harris County Judge candidate Dr. Letitia Plummer at ROOSTAR Roostar Vietnamese Grill at 5551 Richmond. He later met Fort Bend County Commissioner Dexter McCoy at FRESSO COFFEE & TEA at 4899 Hwy 6 in Missouri City.
