Minor League Cricket Kicks Off Third Season Powered by Extensive Support from Key Partners

DALLAS: The Sunoco Minor League Cricket (MiLC) Championship launched its third season over the past weekend, with 12 matches taking place in America’s most extensive cricket competition. On Saturday, Aug. 5, a season kickoff event celebration took place at Sixes Social Cricket in Dallas, TX. Star players, cricket community leaders and MiLC partners celebrated the start of seven weeks of all-action T20 cricket featuring the best players across the country.

The event at Sixes featured appearances by MiLC players including Unmukt Chand (Atlanta Lightning), Sujith Gowda (Dallas Mustangs), Rushil Ugarkar (Dallas Mustangs) and Karthik Gattepalli (Houston Hurricanes).

Sunoco, Title Partner of Minor League Cricket, was represented at the kickoff party by Patrick Albo, Director of Business Development. Sunoco’s support of cricket in the community stretches back well over a decade in Texas, with the largest fuel distributor in the United States partnering on a national level with Minor League Cricket since its second season.

At the event, Albo commented that “We sponsored cricket locally down in the Houston market for the last 15 years. Minor League Cricket on the national level is a great fit for Sunoco to participate with – to see the crowds and all the excitement is amazing. It’s really great to see where cricket is going. As Sunoco grows, the cricket organization and the Minor League grows – it’s something to connect on with our customers and we’re really excited and happy to be here.”

Making remarks on behalf of Laxmi, Official Partner of Minor League and a leading South Asian food brand was Sundeep Lamba, Head of Sales & Marketing for the Laxmi brand at House of Spices.

Lamba spoke to the significance of cricket to the South Asian community and how the sport is poised to grow in the years to come across the United States, commenting that: “Laxmi has been here for 50 years in America and we are almost in every single household. We are happy that cricket is here. We know this will be a big event here and a big sport. Laxmi always wanted to participate in bringing the “desi” culture back into the United States. We are already doing that with the food. We are glad to associate now with cricket.”

Unmukt Chand, of the Atlanta Lightning for the 2023 season and previously captain of the 2021 MiLC title-winning Silicon Valley Strikers said: “Minor League Cricket has been critical for the development of American cricket in recent years and I’m excited to compete this year for the Atlanta Lightning. Winning the inaugural MiLC title in 2021 was a real highlight for me in my journey through American cricket. Coming off the success Major League Cricket had in July, it’ll be exciting to see the next generation of players here strive to earn a spot in MLC next summer.”

Minor League Cricket is also supported by Bru, the event’s “Cricket for the Community” partner, and Dolphin Media, MiLC’s Outdoor Partner.

Zubin Surkari, Minor League Cricket Tournament Director, said: “Minor League Cricket is a critical pathway to growing the sport across the country and the support of our official partners facilitates this investment at the grassroots level that will bring through the next generation of American cricket stars. We are very grateful for the partnerships with Sunoco, Laxmi, Bru and Dolphin Media and we are thrilled another season of exciting action in MiLC is underway.”

The first weekend of action saw a pair of victories for the East Bay Blazers and SoCal Lashings in the Pacific Conference along with a win for the Chicago Tigers in a derby matchup with the Chicago Kingsmen. The Atlantic Conference saw five teams register in the win column: the Morrisville Raptors, New Jersey Somerset Cavaliers, Baltimore Royals, The Philadelphians and the Manhattan Yorkers.

One hundred and forty further matches are set to take place across the regular season and two weeks of playoff matchups. The most extensive cricket competition in America, the T20 league is the key pathway to Major League Cricket, which successfully completed its historic launch season in July.

  • TCC Winter 2022 Taped Ball Tournament — Winners: Gladiators, Runners Up: Tuskers

TCC Winter 2022 Taped Ball Tournament — Winners: Gladiators, Runners Up: Tuskers

    Winners; Gladiators

HOUSTON: Gladiators won TCC Taped ball Winter 2022 tournament by clinically chasing the target of 102 set up by Tuskers. This was a Final between seasoned Gladiators (9th Final) versus the youth of Tuskers (first final) , in which experience triumphed.

With rain threatening to arrive in the second half, Tuskers after winning the toss chose to bat first. The game started as anticipated, with Gladiator bowlers bowling to a plan and inviting Tuskers openers to play risky shots. Tuskers on the other hand did not hold back and started positively. Vishal provided an early breakthrough by knocking Shan’s stumps and then Mathew lured Sukitha into playing a lofted shot that culminated his innings with Sanman taking a catch on the boundary. At the end of power play Tuskers were 24 for 2. That’s when ever young Subodh, delivered a perfect yorker to uproot in form batsman Gihan. After 8 overs the game was evenly poised with Tuskers score at 47 for 3. Sisindu then launched Ninad for a massive six and just when it appeared that floodgates may open, Ninad bowled a beauty to take the wicket of Geethike caught by Sandeep. Aradhya followed it with the key wicket of hard hitting Sisindu and Sandeep bowled Kumudu to pull back Tuskers to 68 for 7. Some sensible batting towards the end, between Thushara and Tharindu took them to a respectable score of 101.

    Runners Up: Tuskers

For Gladiators, Vishal and Ninad took 2 wickets each while Subodh, Mathew, Khatwani and Aradhya chipped in with one wicket each. Calm and reliable wicket keeper Darshan took two catches and athletic fielder Sheetal assisted in one run out.

At the half time, it started to pour heavily, making conditions challenging to bat and Tuskers bowlers who did not allow more than 100 runs in any playoff games were smelling an upset. However, Gladiator openers decided to take the challenge to the bowlers and with some crisp off side shots and rotating strike, Sanman and Amit Patel quickly got off the blocks scoring 22 runs in the first 4 overs. Sisindu then got the prized scalp of Amit. Mathew who has been in good touch joined Sanman and both of them neutralized the bowling attack with high quality display of batting. Sanman scored 32 runs and stitched match winning partnership of 46 runs with Mathew. Mathew (48) and Ninad (9) then finished off the game with relative ease as Gladiators rampaged towards the target in the 16th over. Gladiators captain Emad, and Mr. Dependable Aradhya did not even have to bat much during the playoff games, which is a testament to how far Gladiators batting has come this season.

For Gladiators, this was a reward for the hard work the team had put behind the scenes and the celebrations after winning their 4th championship felt like it was their 1st . This team does not get OLD and loves to have fun!!

Gladiators team was supported on the sidelines by Dinesh (owner J), fast bowler Pawan and Bhargav, batsman Amit Shah and Neeraj and Lucky Mascots Navendu and KP.

The game was followed by a well-managed presentation ceremony organized by Jagdish Biradar. Emad Babri, the captain of Gladiators was handed over the winner’s trophy and the runners up trophy was handed over to the captain of Tuskers Geethike. Mathew from Gladiators was the MVP of the final. Tournament awards were also handed over. Vishal from Gladiators was nominated as the MVP of the tournament. Kusal from SLCC was the best batsman with 275 runs. Kishore from Miura Bulls CC and Kushal from BHCC were the best bowlers with 14 wickets each. Arun from Masters was the best wicketkeeper with 29 Dismissals. Sadesh from HCF was the best Allrounder with 211 runs and 8 wickets. • TCC Taped Ball Fall 2022 Tournament Winners: Big XII, Runners Up SLCC

TCC Taped Ball Fall 2022 Tournament Winners: Big XII, Runners Up SLCC

    Winners: Big XII

HOUSTON: The prior weekend ended in an anti-climactic washout delaying the much-awaited Final of the TCC Taped Ball Fall 2022 cricket tournament to Feb 4th. But the rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the finalists, SLCC and Big XII, both of whom had played attractive cricket throughout the tourney. This was the proverbial David versus Goliath matchup – SLCC, the table-topping Goliath, having featured in a dozen previous finals; Big XII, the underdog David, having begun the season with two losses before flipping the script to record eight consecutive wins. Would SLCC’s confidence from being a repeat winner reign supreme or would it be Big XII’s relentless persistence after many a barren season that was going to be rewarded finally?

Big XII skipper Arun won the toss and backed the team’s bowling strengths. Big XII’s four-pronged pace attack comprising the disciplined skipper, his trusted lieutenant Prabaharan, seasoned campaigner Sunny, and talismanic all-rounder Aneesh, was always going to be a handful. Wickets began tumbling when Ranil miscued a hoick off Arun and Eshwar pouched the skier in the deep. The tone had been set, Big XII wasn’t going to choke in big moments. The very next ball Sunny had Kusal nick to Rex and suddenly both SLCC openers were back in the hut for only a dozen runs. Wickets continued to tumble as Prabaharan, Aneesh and Bala skidded past SLCC’s defenses, each picking up a wicket. SLCC now had its back against the wall with the scoreboard 33-5 at the halfway mark. The second half of the SLCC inning witnessed a gritty comeback on the back of a masterful partnership between Thilan and Thusitha. They put on 56 runs as the pair rebuilt amidst the ruins. Thilan played the shot of the morning when he pulled a pacy short ball from Prabaharan in front of square for a stunning six. SLCC completed its innings shortly thereafter setting Big XII 96 runs to win its first title.

    Runners Up: SLCC

Big XII got off to a customary busy start as openers Eshwar and Rajiv scurried to 14 in 2 overs. But SLCC pegged one back when Thusitha had the dangerous Eshwar caught behind. A budding partnership between Rajiv and mainstay Swapnil was cut short by Thusitha as he picked up the second of his eventual four wickets. This brought Big XII’s most capped keeper-batsman Rex to the middle who combined with Rajiv to stitch a useful 24 run partnership that steadied the ship. Just as Rajiv looked set scoring at will with trademark languid grace, a misunderstanding with his former roommate ended in his run out giving SLCC a glimmer of hope. Adriraj’s dismissal mimicked Eshwar’s which brought the in-form Aneesh to the crease. Thereafter Rex was in MVP element, flicking SLCC bowlers repeatedly through square, unsettling their rhythm and haring between the wickets. By the time Aneesh and Rex departed Big XII was just one blow away from victory which was delivered by their semi-final MVP, Prabaharan. Big XII had finally become deserved champions after a decade-long campaign. Writeup is provided by a “professional” blogger/commentator Adriraj Chakraborty

The game was followed by a well-managed presentation ceremony organized by Jagdish Biradar. Arun, the captain of Big XII was handed over the winner’s trophy and the runners up trophy was handed over to  captain of SLCC Dushan. Rex from Big XII was the MVP of the final. Tournament awards were also handed over. Aneesh from Big XII was the MVP of the tournament. For Divn I, Sukitha from Tuskers was the best batsman with 239 runs, Prasad from BHCC was best bowler with 20 wickets, Ranil from SLCC was the best wicketkeeper with 19 dismissals, Sukitha from Tuskers was the best allrounder with 239 runs and 10 wickets. Special awards were given to Prashant from Powerstars for century and Aneesh from Big XII for Hat trick. For Divn II, Paul from Miura Bulls was the best batsman with 201 runs, Jameel from Champions CC II was the best bowler with 13 wickets, Saurabh from Woodlands Hurricanes with 19 dismissals was the best wicket keeper, Gaurav from Miura Bulls was the best allrounder with 166 runs and 10 wickets.Online scorecard is at: https://www.cricclubs.com/3T/fullScorecard.do?matchId=1381&clubId=8675

Houston Marathon Wows Sewa International Volunteers, Runners

Over 100 Sewa volunteers helped along Mile 8 Mega Refueling Station serving the thirsty runners.

HOUSTON: While the Indian American community was celebrating the winter festivals of Sankranti, Pongal, Lohri, and others, a few from the community geared up to participate and volunteer for the 51st Chevron Houston Marathon held on Sunday, January 15. The marathon attracted over 27,000 participants, and broke the previous records set by runners. Participants from all the 50 states and more than a dozen countries met to run across Houston. More than forty members of Sewa International’s SELF (Sleep, Exercise,

Living in the present, Food and diet) program (www.sewausa.org/self) completed the full/half marathons. Some of them recorded their personal best time, and many of these were first time runners.

Over one hundred Sewa volunteers helped along the Mile 8 Mega Refueling Station serving the thirsty runners.
More than fifty of these volunteers were high school and middle school students, and their energy and enthusiasm were on full display. The runners not only got water and energy drinks but also much energy and love. Bollywood music was played to pump runners that passed by.

Nayonika Pande, a sophomore at Elkins High School and a long time Sewa volunteer, said she woke up early and was out the door at 5 am to drive from Sugar Land to be at the Sewa Mile 8 Refueling Station to support the runners. “It was a beautiful morning with the temperature in the 60s; and perfect weather for running. I enjoyed helping, encouraging, and cheering the participants. I enjoyed this volunteering opportunity and saw a marathon for the first time in my life; the support and happiness we all had for each other was amazing,” she said.

Shoumili Chowdhury, a freshman from Clements High School, who also volunteered said, “Even though I was on the sidelines, I was still able to experience the marathon as if I was truly running. I may not have been as sweaty of course but talking with others and exchanging a few words was enough for me to enjoy the marathon. I will never forget the type of people I saw running, from a person wearing a pickle costume to a woman with one arm. I very much enjoyed encouraging and cheering for these people.”

Like all the other volunteers, two high school students, Divya and Tara, were ready before the pickup time of 4.30 AM. They both were full of energy and stayed enthusiastic until we finished the event at 10:30 AM.

Shanti Thangavel and Pranav Patankar, our SELF leads completed the full marathon and recorded their personal best time. Mahesh Bhat, Sewa International’s SELF program lead and half marathon participant said, “This was an opportunity for us to showcase our commitment to being healthy, offering support to those who want to commit to a more balanced lifestyle, and what we can do and achieve from being actively involved and taking care of our health”.
Bharathraj Hassan and Santosh Jha, Sewa International’s volunteer captain for the event, said, “It was a joy to train and work with so many of our young and older volunteers. Many have already signed up for the 2024
Houston Marathon and we will surely have more runners and more volunteers from Sewa participating next year”.

HOUSTON: The 52nd Chevron Houston Marathon and 22nd Aramco Houston Half Marathon held on Jan 15, again lived up to their reputation for being flat and fast, a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Held “in-person” after 2 years of virtual marathons, it was a sellout with about 27,000 registered runners.  It was warmer than usual but a beautiful day; at start at 7 AM the temperature was 54 degrees rising to about 67 by 11 AM. The Indo Americans had a significant presence this year – running, walking and volunteering. There were many Indo American youngsters at the several water stations along the routes, handing out Gatorade and water to runners, and cheering them along!

The Marathon is the largest sporting event in Houston and accommodates runners with a broad range of abilities. The Marathon starts and ends at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown. The full marathon course is 26.2 and the half marathon 13.1 miles. This year, the men’s winner of the Full Marathon was Dominic Ondoro of Kenya, with a time of 02:10:36. Hitomi Niiya of Japan, took top honors for the women, with a time of 02:19:24. In the Half Marathon, Leul Gebreselase Aleme of Ethiopia, claimed the title in the men’s division with a time of 01:00:34. The women’s division winner was Hiwot Gebremaryam of Ethiopia, with a time of 01:06:28. Emily Sisson shattered her own American record in the half marathon by finishing in 1:06:52 and placed second behind Hiwot.

Photo of an Indo American group at start in Corral E at the 2023 Houston Half Marathon. Left to Right – Kanchan Kabad, Meera Narayana, Sesh Bala and Neeta Balsaver.

The Houston Marathon is also a charitable event; the runners and the organization raised money for many area charities.

The route has been essentially the same since 2017. The flow of some 27,000 runners through a common start gate can be challenging. It can take up to an hour for the last person waiting to cross the start line! The organizers had assigned the runners into five corrals based on running ability. The cheering squads at the hoopla stations along the route were entertaining as usual. The finish line at the Convention Center is always handled extremely well with spectators cheering you on as you finish.  Security precautions were very visible.  The organizers deserve much praise for the management of such a large race.

At start when all runners are assembled at the GRB convention center, you could see several individual and group runners from the Indo-American community. You could hear Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, and certainly many other Indian languages being spoken. The Indo American community participation seems to increase each year!

The Houston Marathon has been a sell-out each year for many years. The next Houston Marathon is on Jan 14, 2024. There is also a 5K race the previous day. The registration is already open! The details are at the site chevronhoustonmarathon.com.  Organizations like HoustonFit, Fort Bend Fit and KatyFit can help with getting trained.

  • TCC Taped Ball Spring 2022 Championships: Powerstars Win, Gladiators Runners Up

TCC Taped Ball Spring 2022 Championships: Powerstars Win, Gladiators Runners Up

HOUSTON: Powerstars won the third TCC Taped Ball championship defeating 8th time finalist Gladiators in the final of the Spring 2022 Premier tournament which is a once in year tournament for the best teams of TCC Taped Ball.

    Winners: Powerstars

Gladiators won the toss and elected to bat. It was a steady start for the first two overs before Karthik and Eklavya did the damage in the 3rd and 4th over to reduce Gladiators to 20/2 in 4 overs to mark the end of the powerplay. Then the duo of Dylan and Kaly, who bowled exceptionally well in playoffs continued the bowling. Gladiators played the bowlers with caution and steadily marched towards a decent total of 58/2 in 10 overs. Emad Badri ( 46 ) scored some quick runs but regular wickets at other end had Gladiators struggling at 94/5 in 15 overs. Karthik’s strategic bowling changes ensured there were regular wickets taken and restricted Gladiators for 127 for 9. Karthik finished with 3 for 28 in 4 overs including a maiden wicket.

Powerstars Openers Money Singh and Navin Negi started the innings at a very brisk pace and never let the bowlers settle into rhythm from ball one. Sreenivas Seelam joined the chase after 1st wicket and Navin Negi scored scorching boundaries back to back in Ninad’s over to take the score to 35/1 in 3 overs. At the end of the powerplay of 4 overs, Powerstars were 38 for one. Sreenivasa Seelam joined the party with a beautifully crafted lofted drive on the offside to get the boundary of the bowling of the ace spinner Sandeep K.

    Runners up: Gladiators

Powerstars kept the runs flowing from both ends before Sreenivas was out for 13. Prashanth Manne, who joined Navin Negi, looked in complete control to bring Powerstars total to 78 for two. In the eleventh over, right after the break, Navin Negi brought up yet another masterful and classy Half Century. • TCC Taped Ball Spring Professional Tournament 2022: CSK Win, HCF Runners Up

TCC Taped Ball Spring Professional Tournament 2022: CSK Win, HCF Runners Up

HOUSTON: Cypress Super Kings (CSK) won the TCC Professional division championship by dominating the playoffs. Houston Cricket Fighters (HCF) ended up as finalists after losing to CSK by 14 runs in a closely fought game. CSK lost the toss and was asked to bat first by HCF. The openers Aravinthkumar Ganesan (27) and Madhusudhan (12) got CSK off to a rapid start racing to 36 within the 4th over. Ashwin Ravi (24) anchored the innings with yet another masterful middle order batting display. A brilliant cameo from Sriram Sureshkumar (24), solid support from Vijai Prakash (13) and excellent selfless running from the lower order batsman helped CSK reach a defendable score of 126.

    Winners: CSK

After a quick start from the HCF opening batsman, the CSK bowlers simplified their game plan and stuck to a tight line and length to pull back the run rate below 6. This created a lot of pressure on the HCF batters leading to fall of wickets. Abhishek Ravi bowled an opening spell of 4 overs on the trot testing the batsman constantly and removed both the openers. The experienced Sriram Sureshkumar bowled tidily with an economy under 5 and picked up the crucial wicket of Mayur Patel to end up as the finals MVP. Saravanakumar Selvaraj, who was the pick of the bowlers on finals day, showed his class and guile to get HCF’s top batsman and prized scalp of Amit Rathod and another to finish with a brace of wickets. Karthik Bhupathy – CSK’s very own “game changer” played an instrumental part in getting 2 important wickets and bowled the difficult overs in the back end of the game. He got rid of the explosive Sunil Patel thanks to a brilliant running catch at long on by Aravinthkumar and dismissed Srini Pathala to break HCF’s resistance. Ashwin Ravi, also the TCC taped ball Spring 2022 Professional division MVP of the season, bowled aggressively through the middle and later powerplay overs to deliver the title to CSK by getting rid of 2 quick wickets of back to back deliveries in the 11th over to give CSK the upper hand in the defense of 126. There was excellent comraderie between the two teams and the game was contested in a healthy manner.

    Runners up: HCF

The game was followed by a well organized presentation ceremony organized by Jagadish Biradar. Dinesh Kasiwal of Team Gladiators was thanked for voluntary work on scheduling. Adithya Balasubramanian, the captain of CSK received the winner’s trophy and the runners up trophy was collected by Amit Rathod, counterpart from HCF. Sriram Sureshkumar picked up the award for MVP of the finals and Ashwin Ravi took home the coveted Player of the Series award (351 runs and 14 wickets). Other tournament awards were presented to Suyash Rai (best batsman with 266 runs), Omar Bangash (best bowler with 18 wickets), Saurabh Merai (best keeper with 35 catches), Chitrang Khatri (best all-rounder with 220 runs and 12 wickets), and special century award for Sadesh Chandana and special hat-trick award for Robin Varghese and Sagar Puri. Seattle Thunderbolts Win Minor League Cricket Championship

MORRISVILLE, NC: The Seattle Thunderbolts continued a streak of remarkable form into the final of the 2022 Toyota Minor League Cricket Championship presented by Sunoco, defeating the Atlanta Fire by 10 runs to win the
2022 championship title on Sunday, Aug. 28. The Thunderbolts claimed a $150,000 purse for winning America’s most extensive cricket championship, with their star bowler Phani Simhadri awarded the 2022 Most Valuable Player award for the season.

The match, held in scenic Church Street Park in Morrisville, NC, reached an exciting conclusion under the lights with thousands of fans in attendance. The Seattle team won the toss and elected to bat, with opener Andries Gous hitting a quick-fire 48 from 44 balls and Shubham Ranjane scoring a half-century, reaching 51 off 45 deliveries. Atlanta’s bowling was led by Steven Taylor, taking three wickets in his four overs.

Atlanta’s run chase faltered as conditions cooled into the evening. Fire captain Aaron Jones anchored the innings with 64 from 51 balls but could only watch on as wickets fell around him, no other Atlanta batter passing 30 runs. Shubham Ranjane was the pick of the Seattle bowlers, claiming four wickets to go along with his half-century to resoundingly earn Player of the Match honors. The Fire’s last gasp efforts to win were extinguished when Phani Simhadri took two wickets in the nineteenth over. The league MVP claimed three wickets on the day, giving Simhadri a remarkable total of 46 wickets throughout the tournament at a strike rate of 8.8 and an economy rate of 5.94.

The last over began with the Fire needing an unlikely 18 runs to win with only two wickets remaining and Seattle sealed the title as Atlanta fell 10 runs short of their target. • ‘Little Master’ Sunil Gavaskar Now Bats for Children with Congenital Heart Condition

‘Little Master’ Sunil Gavaskar Now Bats for Children with Congenital Heart Condition

    By Pramod Kulkarni

Donors and wellwishers gathered around the Little Master Sunil Gavaskar (center in brown vest) after the fund raiser for the Heart to Heart Foundation at India House, Photo: Bijoy Dixit/Unique Photo Images

HOUSTON: Sunil “Sunny” Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricket opening batsman, was dubbed affectionately as the Little Master. He was little alright. At 5’5”, he was at least a foot shorter than the mighty West Indies pace bowlers he faced without a helmet. But he was a master at straight-bat strokes that enabled him set test records of the time (1971-1987) — 125 test matches, 214 innings, 10,122 runs, 34 centuries, and highest score of 236. He also scored a century in ODIs.

Gavaskar’s career as a broadcaster and color analyst continues to this day. However, he has started a new inning — batting for the Heart to Heart Foundation that has provided more than 20,000 free surgeries for children battling congenital heart disease under his Chairmanship. While the treatment is underway, the parents can stay in an adjacent dormitory at no cost. The parents try to pay back for the treatment to the best of their ability by working in the gardens or kitchens.

Gavaskar was in Houston last Sunday at a India House fund raiser for the Heart to Heart Foundation. This was a follow-up to a fund raising tour he had conducted in 2019 at 10 cities in North America, but had not included any city in Texas.

This time, Gavaskar’s first stop was at the AAPI convention in San Antonio prior to the Houston event. At all these fund raisers, the presentation consists of an interview session with Arvind Thiagrajan of the Heart to Heart Foundation, describing various anecdotes that spanned his legendary career.

There are annually 300,000 children born in India with a congenital heart condition (CHD). Most of these children are suffering from malnutrition as children of daily wage earners. Without surgery or medical treatment, over 25% of these children die before their first birthday. The Heart to Heart Foundation conducts surgeries and cath treatments for these children at no cost to the parents. The foundation operates three Sai Sanjeevani hospitals in India in Atal Nagar, Chhattisgarth; Palwal in Haryana, and Kharghar in Navi Mumbai. Three more hospitals are in planning stages in Fiji, Telangana, and even Mississippi. The hospitals have a 99% success rate.

Since becoming part of the Heart to Heart Foundation, Gavaskar himself has pledged to fund 35 surgeries on his own each year to match his 35 centuries. He explained that he was inspired to help the CHD children because his own test career would not have taken off if not given a second cricketing life at the score of 12 by Garfield Sobers during his first test inning by missing a simple sitter of a catch at the slips, and how he went on to score a half century. Later on, Gavaskar was given a second chance once again by Sobers at the score of 6 and he went on to score his first 100. “I went on to keep my place in the India’s test team for 17 years,” Gavaskar explained. “That’s why this cause resonates with me. We’re giving a second chance to a child born with CHD. When I see the joy in their parents’ expressions, it is for me a joy greater than scoring a century.”

Each CHD surgery costs $2,000. As an incentive to donate, Gavaskar had promised to sign a bat for each $2,000 donation. A long line of donors gathered after the India House presentation to have their bats signed by the Little Master.

Gavaskar has cricket in his genes. His uncle Madhav Mantri played four test matches for India in the 1950s. During the Houston presentation, Gavaskar explained how his uncle taught him the value of earning a test cap. “He had a cupboard with all his cricket blazers, woolen jumpers, and caps lined up,” recalled Gavaskar. “I was about 9 years old and I picked up a cap and said I am going to keep this. But my uncle refused, saying these are all the caps I have earned. You’ll have to earn your own caps. I remembered this lesson when I walked onto the field the first time as a test cricketer for India.”

Gavaskar recounted an incident that his mother told him occurred a few days at the hospital after his birth. There were many babies in the ward. Sunil was born with a slight hole on one of his ears. When one of his uncles came for a second visit, he noticed that the baby next to the mother did not not have the hole in the ear. “There was great panic in the ward,” Gavaskar recounted. “Finally, I was found near a fisherwoman. So, I could have easly spent my life as a fisherman on the coastline of Mumbai … and look how many times I got out fishing outside the off stump!”
There was also a lesson early in life about playing through pain. “I was about three years old and my mother was tossing me a rubber ball and I was batting with a plastic bat. Once I connected and hit my mother on the nose, drawing blood. I was mortified, but my mother made sure I continued to play because if one is going to be a cricket player, it is necessary to play through the pain.”

How did Sunny’s straight drive perfection come about? “When we practiced near home in Bombay, we had narrow lanes to play. There was a building on one side and a building on the other side. So the only was to score runs was to hit the ball as straight as possible! A straight drive to the boundary is a supreme insult to a pace bowler.”

Gavaskar considers India’s World Cup win 1983 under Captain Kapil Dev as his greatest achievement in cricket. He was pleased with the recent movie ‘83’ that was made by director Kabir Khan. Within the context of a movie, Gavaskar thought the presentation was quite authentic. “I was pleased that my role was played a good looking actor (Tahir Raj Bhasin).”

The Houston audience came away from the evening with great appreciation for the Little Master as a legendary cricketer and also as a philanthropist with a heart.
