PEARLAND: As with the play performed last year, this year’s production also immediately caught the eye with the sets on stage. Except, there were none, just a series of cleverly taken images of different locales, digitally reproduced and projected on a huge scale to give the impression of depth and immersion for the actors. To this, a time clock and locale name were superimposed, blurring the gap between a stage production and a movie screen.

Dr Padmini Ranganathan, the President of the Houston chapter of the Udavam Karangal (Helping Hands) explained how the organization has been serving the underprivileged for 40 years in Chennai, India with the help of the Houston community.

Into this high-tech setting came and went the nine characters of the play “Tik, Tik, Tik” produced and directed by Houston’s own imaginatively creative mind with a flair for theatrics, Rajan Radhakrishnan. Never mind that his day-job is to make people and events happy at Indian Summer restaurant and Dawat Catering, Rajan, as he is universally known, is truly a performer at heart. The English-language play was which was staged at the Meenakshi Temple Society on Sunday, December 8 was in support of the Indian charity Udavum Karangal.

In this storyline, integrally woven by Houston’s Chandarmouli, you are drawn into the web of deceit and ambition. An internationally popular musician (Salil Badekar) is targeted by an international terrorist organization because of his remarks about religious faith. He travels to Bombay and finds a blind woman (Alpa Shah) who is a gifted singer, for his world tour. The musician chooses the blind woman as the disciple for his guru’s son (Vishy Raman), who is jealous that his late father promoted the musician to become a famous singer, ignoring his own son’s ambitions.

Meanwhile, a plot is hatched by zealots (Govindan Somaskandan  as the head and Shivi Pawa as the accomplice) to plant a bomb in the piano the musician will be using at his concert in a venue whose owner (Mahesh Shah) is concerned about. By chance, the blind woman has overheard the plan and tries to alert law enforcement officers (Sundy Srinivasan and Gayatri Rao) of the sinister plot as they use ethe voice of a video influencer (Lakshminarayan Subramanian) to confuse the lead terrorist.

How the blind woman changes the diabolical mind of a terrorist and convinces him to adopt a normal life as a human being is the central theme on which the play “Tik, Tik, Tik” was created. Alpa Shah, who was also the Co-Director, steals the show with her passionate appeal to reconsider and shows her versatility s an actress.

Dr Padmini Ranganathan, the President of the Houston chapter of the Udavam Karangal (Helping Hands) explained how the organization has been serving the underprivileged for 40 years in Chennai, India with the help of the Houston community. “We have hosted annual events for over two decades to support several projects in education, healthcare and women’s empowerment”, she explained to the full auditorium. “The Jeevan Community College and Million Midday Meal program are among the projects which have benefited from contributions from the Houston community.”

Ranganathan also told the audience that, on December 5, the Government of Tamil Nadu had awarded S. Vidyakar, who founded Udavam Karangal in 1983, the Best Social Worker award towards the service of the differentially abled children and the destitute mentally ill patients. In 41 years he has helped 5600 patients through the Jeevan School for Special Children and activity room at Thiruverkadu. Projects sponsored by the Houston Chapter include college education for children of daily wage workers and needy items for handicapped called Project Paraspara.

At the after play dinner, the cast of “Tik, Tik, Tik” which was staged at the auditorium of the Meenakshi Temple Society on Sunday, December 8 in support of the Indian charity Udavum Karangal.

The actors in the play are well-known locals who have busy personal and professional lives but are thespians with a love to perform: Govindan Somaskanthan ; Sunderama  “Sundy” Srinivasam; Mahesh Shah; Lakshminarayan Subramanian; Salil Bhadekar; Gayathri Rao; Vishy Raman; Shivi Pawa and Alpa Shah.

To that, add the talents of Padmini Ranganathan as the Creative Head, Story: Chandramouli; Director: Rajan Radhakrishnan; Co-Director:  Alpa Shah; Producer: Padmini Ranganathan; Music:  Balaji Varadharajan; Video Jack:  Ram Mahadevan; Lighting:  Partha Krishnaswamy; Visual effects & Production design:  Vishy Raman; Sets and Properties:  Nalini Kannan.

This show marks the 22nd year that Indian Summer (previously Madras Pavilion) and specifically Rajan had produced a show in support of the Udavum Karangal of USA, which in turn sends the proceeds to the Udavum Karanga  in Chennai, India. This year’s show was able to collect over $100,000 for the charity.

  • Tagore Center Foundation Lecture Series: In Search of A Prophet – A Spiritual Journey with Kahlil Gibran

Tagore Center Foundation Lecture Series: In Search of A Prophet – A Spiritual Journey with Kahlil Gibran

    Presented by Paul-Gordon Chandler

    By Chandana Guha

HOUSTON: On October 19, the Tagore Center Foundation (Foundation/TCF) presented to a select interested and intellectual audience as part of its annual lecture series, a program reflective of the Foundation’s (TCF) vision and so apt and befitting our current times. The speaker was Paul-Gordon Chandler, an author, art curator, interfaith peacemaker and authority on the Middle East and Africa. The topic was based on Chandler’s recent publication In Search of A Prophet – A Spiritual Journey with Kahlil Gibran.

Attended by a representative from the CGI office and numerous other dignitaries from the intellectual and social scenes in Houston, it was a program very organized, intellectually stimulating, interactive and reflective of the vision of the Foundation (TCF), and a step in the mission of the Foundation (TCF), of promoting the great Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore’s message of a borderless world and universality in mankind. “We are more same than we are different.”

After a meet and greet with an array of delicious smorgasbord of almost lunch like snacks, finger foods, deserts and drinks, the program began with a short speech by Mr. Prashant Sona, representing the CGI expressing the excellence of the author and thanking the Foundation for upholding the ideals of Tagore and Gandhi. The co-founder of TCF Dr. Asoke DeySarkar then introduced other dignitaries and significant donors and emphasized the Foundations vision of promoting peaceful co-existence amongst us. Dr. Ruma Acharya DeySarkar, co-founder and President of TCF, welcomed attendees, thanked special guests, presented an architectural vision of the future of TCF and highlighted her commitment to keep the dialog ongoing across our diverse communities.

Ms. Paula Sutton, a prominent Houstonian and a lifetime supporter and patron of TCF, introduced the invited speaker.

Then came an hour of the most uplifting, inspiring, eloquent speeches, (reminiscent of the famous TED-Talks) by Paul-Gordon Chandler. Chandler grew up in Senegal, West Africa, has lived and worked extensively around the world in senior leadership roles in faith-based publishing, the arts, relief and development and the Anglican Communion. He is recognized as a global leader in using the arts to further our quest for a more harmonious future, both with each other and with the earth.

In keeping with the Foundation’s vision, Chandler drew parallels between Tagore and Gibran. The 2 literary giants were contemporaries, had met in person twice and had immense respect for each other. They shared a common vision of a borderless world and the universality of mankind, each expressing their message and vision in their unique ways.

The lecture was based on Chandler’s publication In Search of A Prophet – A Spiritual Journey with Kahlil Gibran. Kahlil Gibran born in1883 in the mountains of Lebanon, is certainly not easily defined or categorized as Chandler says. His life, paintings, writings defy classification, whether they are religious, literary or artistic. However modern-day scholars, academics, biographers, film makers, religious leaders continue to claim him in their own perspective and label him from their own lens. Chandler described Kahlil eloquently… Kahlil the poet, Kahlil the revolutionary, Kahlil the counter culturist, Kahlil the philosopher, Kahlil the artist, Kahlil the painter, Kahlil the modernizer of Arab literature, Kahlil the prophet, Kahlil the visionary, Kahlil the Sufi, Kahlil the Universalist…..and quoted the contemporary Syrian poet Adonis to sum up “He is a star spinning outside the orbit of the other sun…in his universal acceptance.”

Kahlil Gibran wrote for both the East and the West, presenting a non-sectarian vision of the world and offering us a spiritual tapestry that transcends human divisions. Despite the epic success of some of his writings, so much of Gibran’s work remains in relative obscurity. Gibran had the opportunity of meeting or knowing many luminaries of the early 20th century, such as French sculptor Auguste Rodin, Indian Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore, Irish poet William Butler Yeats, Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, prominent American artist Albert P Ryder, the head of the Bahai faith Abdul Baha and the Roosevelt family.

Chandler’s book is not a biography. Rather it is a type of pilgrimage into Kahlil’s own spiritual journey. In Chandler’s words “ This journey has been an adventure that has taken me all over the world to museums, art galleries, churches and mosques, and through revolutions and counter revolutions — to Beirut, Boston, Cairo, Paris, New York City, Washington DC, Detroit, Savanah, and Mexico City…….I sought to understand what led him from being someone born into what was then an exclusive and intolerant Christian community to becoming one who embraced all in our world, and as a result became embraced by all.”

Thank you, Paul Chandler, for sharing your journey with us.

The afternoon ended with an enthusiastic interactive Q&A session and a celebratory champagne toast and cheers for the author. We wish Chandler the very best and look forward to many such dialogues in the future from Tagore Center Foundation.

  • Hindu Heritage Youth Camp: Perspective of a Camper from Kuwait

Hindu Heritage Youth Camp: Perspective of a Camper from Kuwait

    By Anika Sharda

HOUSTON: Carpe Diem – seize the day. If you win the morning you win the day.

I lie on my soft mattress on the top bunk, look out from my window and see the vivid warm colors melting with the dawn sky.  I race to the bathroom to wash my teeth, clean my face and change into my clothes, before heading out of our Sita Left cabin with my fellow campers, while munching on Nutri Grain biscuits.

Hindu Heritage Youth Camp is the best part of Summer for many adolescents and children. A total of 150 Hindu campers, and 40 counsellors take part in this five day camp only to leave with cherished memories, learn hinduism, play games, participate in cultural activities, and make long lasting friendships that will stay till their Sannyasa age.

Established in 1984, HHYC, youth wing of Hindus of Greater Houston, proudly celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2024. After years of hunting for camp sites and difficulty in finding suitable places to host it, they finally bought their 6 million dollar Walden in Columbus with tremendous contribution from Donors. A shout out to Subhash ji Gupta  family who contributed a whopping 1.75 million dollars.

We head to the newly furnished basketball court to do the early morning Shakha. The chatter and noise of students talking quiets down as we are called over to assemble in our groups named on planets – Mangala, Surya, Budh, Shukra, Shani etc. Facing the sun we perform the Surya Namaskar, yoga and meditate. We are split by gender and age to play games like Kho Kho, and Kabaddi.

The eagerly awaited breakfast is cooked by the volunteers and head chief – Sushma Pallod. Cereals, donuts, muffins and fruits are displayed on an assorted rack.

Once breakfast is done, we head back to the cabin to take showers and wash off our sweat. Time is limited and the stop watch is on for three minutes. Counselors monitor the bunks and campers relish talking and laughing with them. I ask them to braid my hair. They’re more than happy to help.

HHYC challenges the immense task of educating students about Hinduism. Lessons are interactive, social, and fun. Counselors discuss topics ranging from Astrology to Ayurveda.

We learn that Hinduism is a way of life. We listen, enthralled and horrified, as we hear the terrible truth about the magnificent Taj Mahal. Though the caste system existed, it was not rigid till the British made the divisions. We thought the worst was over after August 15th 1947, but then the Bengali Genocide occurred. In 1971, 3 million Hindus were massacred. Analysts say that in the next two decades there won’t be a Hindu population in Bangladesh. Campers are moved to tears imagining these tales.

Further, education sessions delineate the eight immortal gods (Chiranjeevi) or Shiva’s third eye.  Learning about shruti and smriti, moksh, dharma and karma is the real understanding of hinduism. Intriguing and mind-boggling is the theory behind dreams.

The counselors are not just imparting loaded information but passing on some life nuggets in cool ways – a counselor says ‘Comparison is the thief of joy’, and it stays with me.

A highlight from the week is meeting a celebrity: Alok Kanojia – a previous camper himself who is currently a psychiatrist, entrepreneur and influencer.

For lunch, tacos and nachos are served to us and I love every bite of my meal. Over the week my stomach is happy being fed pizza, pasta, sandwiches, burritos, pav bhaji and varied Indian meals. It’s not just the food that’s scrumptious, the drinks keep me refreshed too. Shrek’s beverage, director’s sweat and purple holi poli water (don’t worry – they are only names) quickly run out.

During the afternoon, arts and crafts are held. We make beautiful designs on bricks which are to be incorporated on the campsite. I draw a diya, and around me watch my friends’ paint lotuses, mandalas, sunsets and Oms. We make lanterns, construct roller coasters with recyclables, and color canvases.

One of the best parts of the day for me comes in the afternoon: free recreation. Sports mean the world to me. I am either swimming in the pool, shooting baskets on the court, setting the volleyball or kicking soccer goals in the net. Moreover there are countless other activities on the site. Gaga ball, pickleball, spike ball, baseball and American football. If you are too hot for  sports, you can chill and chat under the canopy, or stay in the hall playing cards or board games.

Sweaty and stinky? Go for another shower! Rest and relax some before you head out in the evening. It’s time for Bhajans and aarti. We compete to see who sings louder – boys or girls, JV or Varsity?

The aroma of dinner fills the air as we recite the Bhojan Mantra before every meal. We sit together, laugh and argue. Every minute we spend together, the bond gets stronger. Counselors sit with us and this brings us closer to them too. Thinking about leaving is the worst part. Camp is home.

The night events are super fun. Dodgeball is hard but if you can dodge and throw you’ll rule it. Talent show brings to light varied acts Rubix cube, arm wrestling, story telling, singing, dancing and instrumental performances (tabla, guitar, keyboard). All of them keep you at the edge of your seats and wowed in awe. Getting dressed for Garba in your Salwar Kameez, Kurta pajamas, and Lehengas makes us feel glamorous. Dandiya and disco bring the evening to an end. The vibe and spirit is loud, thrilling and exhilarating.

To add to all these activities we have the colorful and vibrant holi. Magenta hair, rainbow faces/bodies can be spotted everywhere. A cornucopia of holi colors and a stock of baby powder is provided. Soon we are bombed with water balloons. Next we jump into the pool and turn the water purple.

Counselors save us a treat for bed time – cookies and milk.

It’s late, campers head back to their cabins, where they whisper, clean up, and get to bed with a bedtime story.

My legs ache with all the running around, my throat is sore, and in no time I am asleep. When I wake up, I am refreshed and full of energy to start a new day.

I question my fellow campers on what they like about camp best, and they quip – ‘I love the food’,  ‘Always my friends’, ‘Dancing in Garba’, ‘Sports’, ‘Holi is mine’, with huge smiles across their faces.

For me, though, it is knowing what being a Real Hindu means. I am not embarrassed to say I am Hindu when asked about my religion.

HHYC’s new forever home at Texas Hindu Campsite is the dream of many families in the Houston community. Funds from people across the country makes HHYC thrive even during difficult times, it was run even during Covid.

HHYC welcomes students from Grade 4 to 12; Junior camp was from July 23rd to 27th and Senior camp from July 30th to August 4th. The summer camp is for Hindus to blend in and feel oneness, living in America where Hindus are a minority.

  • Chitra’s Novel “Independence” Wins American Book Award

Chitra’s Novel “Independence” Wins American Book Award

HOUSTON: Chitra Banerjee’s new novel, Independence, has won the prestigious American Book Award. In fact, Chitra may be the only South Asian author to win the award for the second time (first time was for her collection Arranged Marriage). Set during the partition of British India in 1947, a time when a neighbor was pitted against neighbors and families were torn apart, award-winning author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s novel brings to life the sweeping story of three sisters caught up in events beyond their control, their unbreakable bond, and their incredible struggle against powerful odds.

    Synopsis:

India, 1947. In a rural village in Bengal live three sisters, daughters of a well-respected doctor.

Priya: intelligent and idealistic, resolved to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a doctor, though society frowns on it.

Deepa: the beauty, determined to make a marriage that will bring her family joy and status.

Jamini: devout, sharp-eyed, and a talented quiltmaker, with deeper passions than she reveals.

Theirs is a home of love and safety, a refuge from the violent events taking shape in the nation. Then their father is killed during a riot, and even their neighbors turn against them, bringing the events of their country closer to home.

As Priya determinedly pursues her career goal, Deepa falls deeply in love with a Muslim, causing her to break with her family. And Jamini attempts to hold her family together, even as she secretly longs for her sister’s fiancè.

When the partition of India is officially decided, a drastic—and dangerous— change is in the air. India is now for Hindus, Pakistan for Muslims. The sisters find themselves separated from one another, each on different
paths. They fear for what will happen to not just themselves,
    but each other.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni outdoes herself with this deeply moving story of sisterhood and friendship, painting
an account of India’s independence simultaneously exhilarating and devastating, that will make any reader—new or old—a devoted fan.
