  • The Many Meanings of Diwali: A Festival of Light and Tradition

The Many Meanings of Diwali: A Festival of Light and Tradition

    By Kapil Sharma
As the sun starts to dip lower in the sky and the warmth of summer gives way to the crispness of autumn, Hindus worldwide prepare for the most anticipated time of the year—the festive season. From Dussehra to Karva Chauth and into the heart of winter, this period is packed with celebrations. But none hold the same weight in our cultural consciousness as Diwali, the King of Festivals. For Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists alike, Diwali is a moment of collective joy, reflection, and devotion.
But what makes Diwali so special and so layered? Beyond the twinkling lights, sweets, and family gatherings, Diwali carries with it deep spiritual meaning. While most of us know Diwali as the day Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, there’s much more to the celebration. For instance, why do we worship Goddess Lakshmi on this day, and what connects these various traditions?
Diwali falls on the Amavasya (new moon night) of the Krishna Paksha in the holy month of Karthik. It is a time associated with the return of light after darkness, symbolized by Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya. Yet, the significance of this day stretches even further back in time to the Satyug era, long before the Ramayana.
According to Hindu scriptures, the divine Goddess Lakshmi emerged during the cosmic event of Samudra Manthan—the churning of the ocean. This epic undertaking, conducted by both the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras), was an effort to retrieve Amrita, the nectar of immortality, from the depths of the ocean. During this churning, numerous treasures appeared, and one of them was Goddess Lakshmi herself, the goddess of wealth, beauty, and grace. Lord Vishnu chose her as his consort and blessed her with the role of being the goddess of wealth, beauty, and grace. Her emergence from the cosmic churning symbolizes a profound truth: that wealth and prosperity come only after hard work and perseverance. This union of prosperity with preservation is a reminder that divine virtues often manifest after enduring trials and tribulations. The story serves as a powerful reflection of how the blessings of life—whether material or spiritual—are earned through dedication and effort.
It was on the Amavasya of Krishna Paksha in the holy month of Karthik that Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean, marking this day as auspicious. Centuries later, in the Treta Yuga, Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya on this same day after his 14-year exile. The city was illuminated with lamps to welcome him, and from this tradition, Diwali—meaning “Deepavali” or “a garland of lamps”—was born. What began as the day commemorating the emergence of wealth and prosperity evolved into a grand celebration of victory, light, and devotion.
This is also the reason why homes are meticulously cleaned and decorated with lights and diyas during Diwali. According to Hindu tradition, it is believed that between Sharad Purnima (the full moon night) and Diwali, Goddess Lakshmi roams the Earth in search of homes where she will be welcomed. This period is particularly auspicious for those wishing to invite the goddess’s blessings of wealth and happiness. On Diwali night, during Lakshmi Pujan, it is believed that she visits homes that are prepared to receive her.
The night of Diwali is not just a celebration of physical light but also the spiritual light that drives away darkness. In this way, the lighting of lamps has come to represent the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. When the city of Ayodhya lit millions of lamps to welcome Lord Ram home, it was a grand celebration not only of his return but of the divine light he brought with him.
For Hindus, the days leading up to Diwali are marked by other significant events. Dhanteras is a day of worshipping wealth, symbolized by the goddess Lakshmi herself. Naraka Chaturdashi, the day before Diwali, commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. Each of these rituals serves as a prelude to the most significant day of all—Diwali night, when the goddess Lakshmi graces her devotees and Lord Ram is honored for his righteous victory.
Diwali is more than just a festival of lights—it is a celebration of virtues, wealth, and the victory of light over darkness. The festival’s deep spiritual roots remind us that the blessings of prosperity and happiness come through devotion, perseverance, and the enduring pursuit of righteousness. As homes and streets glow with the warmth of a million lamps, Diwali also serves as a reminder of the ancient principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family. It is a time when the light of Diwali illuminates not just individual homes but the hearts of people across the globe, fostering unity, love, and the spirit of togetherness.

  • 50th Anniversary Celebrations of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, New York

50th Anniversary Celebrations of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, New York

NEW YORK – In 1974, the first mandir of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha  in North America was inaugurated by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj in Flushing, New York. This year, BAPS commemorated 50 years of spiritual upliftment, community service, and cultural preservation through a grand celebration held in the same city where it all began.

The celebrations spanned two weekends and attracted thousands of visitors from across the country. The event highlighted BAPS’s remarkable journey, which began with a few devotees and has since grown into a prominent Hindu organization in the United States, with over 115 mandirs across North America. An interactive exhibition showcased BAPS’s history and contributions over the past five decades.

Honoring this milestone, Congressman Tom Suozzi (NY-3) shared his admiration, saying, “The journey of BAPS is remarkable.” Congressman Suozzi presented the organization with a U.S. Capitol flag flown in honor of BAPS’s 50 years of service and dedication.

The roots of BAPS in North America trace back to His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj (1921-2016), whose life motto, “In the Joy of Others, Lies Our Own,” continues to inspire millions. This sentiment was echoed by Pujya Chaitanyanand Swami from the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, who remarked, “BAPS is an example of how society can live together and serve together in a loving, friendly way.”

The message of compassion, integrity, and devotion is carried forward by the current spiritual leader, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, whose blessings for the event came from India. Inspired by his leadership, 12,500 volunteers worked tirelessly to construct BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Jersey, a monumental symbol of devotion and unity.

Attendees shared personal reflections on the significance of the celebrations:

“When we started with a single mandir in a basement back in 1974, we never imagined that BAPS would grow to over 115 mandirs worldwide, including the largest mandir in the Western Hemisphere, BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham. I am overjoyed to be here, participating in this event. It’s incredible how many lives have been transformed by this initiative of Pramukh Swami Maharaj and Mahant Swami Maharaj,” said Kishore Mehta from Houston, who was the lead volunteer for BAPS activities in 1974.

“The NY50 celebrations help us realize that the seed sown 50 years ago has blossomed into a beautiful tree, gifting society Akshardham in Robbinsville,” shared Smruti Brahmbhatt from Robbinsville, NJ.

“We had an amazing experience walking down memory lane during this celebration. These 50 years have transformed society, thanks to Pramukh Swami Maharaj for providing a foundation of culture and respect, where my children have benefited immensely,” shared Tushar Patel from Orlando, FL.

“Whether it’s Ukraine or Kutch, I’ve seen BAPS be the first to serve the impacted people, pouring out their hearts. I am glad to be here at the 50-year celebration. The concept to creation and the narration of BAPS NY50 was absolutely phenomenal, showcasing the same spirit of service and dedication,” remarked Dr. Parag Mehta, NY.

A distinguished lineup of dignitaries and community leaders graced the event. Among the notable attendees were Binaya Shrikanta Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York, Dr. Varun Jeph, Deputy Consul General, Congressman Tom Suozzi, New York State Assemblymen Edward Braunstein and Ron Kim, State Senator John Liu, and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr.. Religious and community leaders, including Mr. Jagannath Rao from ISKCON Temple Brooklyn, Sister BK Tina from the Brahma Kumaris, and Shiva Acharya,

Earlier this year, the New York State Senate and Assembly passed resolutions commemorating the 50th anniversary of BAPS’s first mandir in North America. The resolutions sponsored by Senator John Liu and Assemblymember Nily Rozic celebrated BAPS’s spiritual, social, and community contributions.

Senator John Liu reflected on the significance of this moment, stating, “This year marks the 50th anniversary of the BAPS mandir in Flushing, a historic milestone for the mandir and our community. The BAPS mandir has been a cornerstone of the Hindu community, serving the spiritual, social, and community needs of so many, and we are proud to commemorate their tremendous commitments to serving the needs of others.”

Assemblymember Rozic added, “It’s an honor to recognize the BAPS Mandir on their 50th anniversary. For 50 years, the Mandir has been a center for worship, cultural heritage, and community service. Its contributions to the lives of its members and the community have been profound and far-reaching. I am grateful to celebrate their dedication to promoting unity, service, and spirituality with my fellow leaders in government.”

The 50th anniversary celebrations in Flushing, NY mark the beginning of similar events across the U.S. and Canada, continuing to showcase BAPS’s dedication to fostering community, spirituality, and service.

  • Statement of Denouncement of Religious Intolerance

Statement of Denouncement of Religious Intolerance

Meeting of the Interfaith Community at the Ashtalaxmi Temple.

Statement from John Strader, Pastor, Horizon Baptist Church and Chair, Fort Bend Interfaith Community

As Pastor of Horizon Baptist Church and Chair of the Fort Bend Interfaith Community, I am deeply saddened and troubled by recent events targeting the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, particularly the backlash following the installation of a statue sacred to the Hindu faith.

Any act of hostility, intimidation, or violence directed toward a house of worship—regardless of the faith it represents— must be unequivocally condemned. Our faith communities are built on mutual respect, love, and the shared value of the dignity of all people. This kind of intolerance not only harms the individuals and families who gather in these
sacred spaces but also damages the bonds of trust that hold our diverse community together.

    Interfaith meeting at Ashtalaxmi Temple

As a follower of Christ, I believe we are called to love our neighbors (Mark 12:31) and seek peace with all people (Romans 12:18). Disrespecting the religious practices or symbols of others is contrary to this calling and undermines the message of grace and reconciliation that Jesus proclaimed.

As the Chair of the Fort Bend Interfaith Community, I join my fellow leaders in firmly denouncing any action that seeks to foster division or violence among us. Our organization is committed to promoting understanding and cooperation among all faiths in our county, and we stand united in our rejection of any act of religious discrimination or harassment.

We call on the broader community to stand with us in solidarity, to reject these actions, and to work together to ensure that every house of worship remains a place of peace, security, and welcome. Let us engage with one another in a spirit of humility, compassion, and mutual respect, knowing that our diversity is not a threat but a strength.

In closing, I offer my prayers for the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple and all those affected by these recent events. May God grant us all the wisdom and courage to build bridges rather than walls, and to be steadfast in love, as we walk together in faith and unity.

    Sincerely,
    John Strader

    By Pravin Sharma

HOUSTON: The Houston chapter of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA held its annual Hindu Sangathan Divas congregation on Aug 24, at the Vadtal Dham Shree Swaminarayan Hindu Temple. This year’s event marked the 20th anniversary of Hindu Sangathan Divas in Houston and was attended by over 180 participants from about 65 organizations of the Greater Houston area. Hindu Sangathan Divas (Unity Day) as the name suggests, is a platform that provides an opportunity to Houston area Hindu organizations to come together, exchange ideas, share material and resources with the goal of synergizing the work for the larger community.

This year’s event theme was a continuation of previous year’s efforts for raising Hindu Dharma awareness among mainstream American society including outreach programs with civic officials, first responders, educational institutions and media influencers along with leveraging each other’s strength and resources for effective media promotions at every opportunity.

Amit Mishra, The Vice-President of HSS Houston chapter, welcomed all the organizations. He acknowledged the achievement of Houston’s vibrant Hindu community during past years which made a positive impact on the community. He also emphasized on the continuous efforts required by all organizations to raise Hindu dharma awareness.

Pradeep Sharma, the director of North Houston chapter kick started the event by emphasizing “why Hindu Sangathan Divas?” He pointed out the various challenges, misconceptions and misinformation being spread about the Hindu Dharma and its impact on our next generations and community at large. He also elaborated on why to have the coordinated activities to achieve the goals without disrupting autonomy of the organizations.

To complement the theme of the year, four key topics were presented by panelists followed by success stories, best practices from each organization in an open discussion.

First topic, Hindu Dharma Awareness to the mainstream community was presented by Arun Sharma and provided few insights on how things have changed by the efforts of all organization in last 20 years and the need for rigorous efforts from all to reach our goal for universal piece.

Second topic was focusing on Dharma awareness in academia and educational institutes, presented by Dr. Sonal Gupta. He highlighted the several cases of misinformation in educational institutes and books which needs to be addressed for correction. Historic Inauguration of the Statue of Union: A Grand Celebration in Sugar Land

SUGAR LAND: The city of Sugar Land witnessed an awe-inspiring event from August 15 to August 18, 2024, as it celebrated the grand inauguration of the Statue of Union, a monumental 90-foot statue of Lord Hanuman, at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple. This magnificent statue, now the tallest Hanuman statue outside India, is also the tallest statue in Texas and the third tallest statue in the United States.

The celebrations commenced with patriotic fervor on August 15, marking India’s Independence Day. The day began with the hoisting of the Tiranga (Indian flag), proudly displayed alongside the US and Texas flags, creating a breathtaking tableau. The sight of Hanuman, the embodiment of strength and devotion, standing majestically in the foreground, enhanced the occasion’s solemnity. The audience was treated to a riveting performance of patriotic songs and the national anthems, including “Vande Mataram,” “Jana Gana Mana,” and the US National Anthem, sung with reverent harmony.

The core of the inauguration ceremonies was steeped in tradition, guided by His Holiness Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, the visionary behind the Statue of Union project. The inauguration rituals followed the most authentic Vedic traditions, meticulously overseen by a multitude of Vedic priests and scholars. This divine ceremony, known as the Pran Prathistha, took place at precisely 9:09 AM on August 18, 2024. In a spectacular display, flowers were showered from a helicopter, divine water was sprinkled over Hanuman and a 72-foot garland was placed on the statue while thousands of devotees chanted the names of Shri Ram and Hanuman in unison, creating an atmosphere of collective reverence and celebration.

The evening of August 18 brought together a host of dignitaries, elected officials, and community leaders. The gathering was a testament to the Statue of Union’s significance, with many speakers reflecting on its cultural and spiritual importance. Their words highlighted the statue’s role as a beacon of courage, strength, and unity. The event’s highlight was the digital projection mapping show that illuminated the statue, bringing Hanuman’s legendary feats to life through vibrant visuals.

The Statue of Union is not just a marvel of engineering but a symbol of the enduring values of devotion and bravery. The team behind the project hopes that visitors will leave the site with a renewed sense of courage and strength, inspired by Hanuman’s legendary spirit.

The Statue of Union stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage shared by the Indian and American communities, and its inauguration has set a new milestone in both spiritual and cultural realms. As the sun set on the final day of the celebrations, it was clear that the Statue of Union had successfully achieved its goal of fostering unity and imparting a bit of Hanuman’s indomitable spirit to all who came to witness its grandeur.

  • Akshar-Purushottam Darshan presented at the World Congress of Philosophy in Rome

Akshar-Purushottam Darshan presented at the World Congress of Philosophy in Rome

Professor Balaganapathi Devarakonda, professor of Philosophy at Delhi University, welcomed the positive academic interest in Akshar-Purushottam Darshan.

ROME: With the blessings and guidance of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, Akshar-Purushottam Darshan – a classical philosophical school of thought and practice of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya – was presented and warmly received at the 25th World Congress of Philosophy in the historic city of Rome, Italy.

The eight-day conference was hosted between August 1 and 8, 2024, at the Sapienza University of Rome, one of the oldest universities in the world and the largest in Europe. It attracted more than 5,000 scholars and students of philosophy from over 120 countries and diverse disciplines and backgrounds.

The prestigious academic event, organized by the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP), served as a platform for some of the brightest minds from around the world to engage in profound discussions and a rigorous exchange of ideas. Through as many as 89 philosophical sub-disciplines, they sought to address contemporary global challenges and foster a deeper understanding of human existence.

During the conference, on August 2, 2024, an insightful session was held by the Congress that focused on spiritual ecology and Akshar-Purushottam Darshan.

Chaired by Mahamahopadhyaya Bhadreshdas Swami, the session aimed to catalyse a re-examination of our underlying attitudes and beliefs about the environment through a lens of religious philosophy, specifically Akshar-Purushottam Darshan.

Scholars from the UK, USA and India presented their research on how the philosophical exploration of Akshar-Purushottam Darshan finds practical expression through devotion, ethical living, and service to humanity and the natural world.

Professor Balaganapathi Devarakonda, Professor of Philosophy at Delhi University, remarked, “I was delighted to see Akshar-Purushottam Darshan so enthusiastically received at such a large academic event. Of course, the Akshar-Purushottam school of Vedanta has its roots in sacred Sanatan Hindu texts, but it may be unfamiliar to some Western scholars of philosophy, so it was very encouraging to see them be interested in, learn about, and engage with its fundamental values and beliefs that can have such a powerful positive impact in our world today.”

In addition to the formal sessions, swamis used interactive workshops, collaborative dialogues, and informal gatherings to make meaningful connections with scholars. This allowed them to share philosophical ideas and learn from each other in a genuine spirit of open academic dialogue and mutual enrichment.

In a personal meeting, Professor Scarantino, President of FISP and the World Congress of Philosophy, and Pujya Bhadreshdas Swami discussed key takeaways from the conference and future directions. Both reiterated the enduring relevance of philosophy in contemporary society and the need for continued dialogue and exploration. Professor Scarantino also thanked Pujya Bhadreshdas Swami for presenting Akshar-Purushottam Darshan at the conference.

After the philosophical discussion, Professor Luca Scarantino was pleased to receive ‘Swaminarayan-Bhashyam,’ the Swaminarayan Sampradaya’s classical Sanskrit commentaries on the Vedanta Prasthanatrayi elucidating the principles of Akshar-Purushottam Darshan, from the author himself, Mahamahopadhyaya Bhadreshdas Swami.

Professor Noburu Notomi, President of the Philosophical Association of Japan and host of the next World Congress of Philosophy was also present at the meeting. He invited BAPS to present the  Akshar-Purushottam Darshan at the 26th World Congress of Philosophy, scheduled to be hosted in Tokyo in 2028.

  • Triple Celebrations in Jain Vishva Bharat (JVB) – Akshay Tritiya, Varship Tap Parna & Mother’s Day

Triple Celebrations in Jain Vishva Bharat (JVB) – Akshay Tritiya, Varship Tap Parna & Mother’s Day

    By Shashank Jain

HOUSTON: Under the spiritual guidance and presence of Samani Arjav Pragyaji, and Samani Swati Pragyaji, Jain Vishwa Bharati (JVB) Preksha Meditation Center, Houston celebrated Akshay Tritiya, Varshi Tap Parna of its member Mukta Jain, and Mother’s Day on May 12, 2024, in its beautiful pyramid hall. Two Samanijis from Orlando, Samani Chaitanya Pragya ji and Samani Him Pragya ji traveled to Houston, to be part of this unique and pious celebration.  In parallel, a Blood donation drive was also organized at the center in which several members donated their blood to save lives.

The festival of Akshaya Tritiya holds special significance for Jains, as it’s the day when Lord Aadinath or Rishabhdev, the first Jain Tirthankara, ended his 400 days long fast. On the day of Akshaya Tritiya, a shravak (an adherent of Jainism) named Shreyans Kumar offered Lord Adinath Ikshu juice or sugarcane juice which ended his rigorous fasting, hence immortalizing the festival for Jains.

What is a Varshi Tap? As a 400 day fast is no longer possible in the modern world, in current times, Jains now follow a Jain fasting regimen that stretches across thirteen months, where the individual establishes a cycle of alternate day Jain fasting & eating. Every year, Akshay Tritiya day is considered the day when persons undertaking this regimen are applauded for their achievement by the community, and they can slowly get back to their normal eating habits.

JVB Houston’s very own member of 23 years, Mukta Jain, undertook this regimen over the past year, and all the members, & many friends were in attendance on the day to celebrate her tapasya. The program started at 10 AM with a procession to lead Mukta to the center where a group of over 25 ladies danced in the foyer and welcomed her with a few beautiful song and dance sequences signifying her long penance. She was then led into the main hall under slanting raised hands where everyone blessed her as she walked through.

Orlando Samaniji Chaitanya Pragya ji thereafter, formally initiated the program with the Namokar Mahamantra & the emcee Priyanka Jain invited Mukta’s daughter Sanemi to recite the 44 Bhaktambar Stotras. Sanemi, a recent UT McCombs graduate, recollected how learning this Strotra was a special bond she shared with Mom when she had memorized it at the young age of 10, with her Mom’s help, and now she was going to sing it for her. She was accompanied by Nishad Kanhere on Tabla, Harprakash Kaur on Harmonium, Sardar Akaal Singh Ji on Manjeera & her brother Sambhav Jain on the flute. Dipti Kanhere was the musical co-ordinator.

Thereafter, Mukta’s sister Bhanu who had specially flown in from India along with their parents spoke about Mukta’s achievement even though she was her youngest sibling. Mukta took the microphone and shared her thoughts & feelings over the past year in beautiful poetic fashion, which left many extremely emotional & in tears.

Priyanka then called upon the JVB patrons for two beautifully choreographed dances with song lyrics signifying & highlighting Mukta’s fasting. After that, JVB Gyanshala’s young kids aged 4 to 12 performed a beautiful skit entitled ‘Who am I?’, which was coordinated and voiced over by Samani Swati Pragya Ji. The young cast was wearing animal masks throughout the skit and kept the audience mesmerized watching them.

After all the cultural activities concluded, Samani Chaitanya Pragya Ji recounted the story & the importance of Akshay Tritiya and importance of the Varshi Tap, and encouraged Mukta & others. • Chinmaya Mission Houston Celebrates the Class of 2024

Chinmaya Mission Houston Celebrates the Class of 2024

    By Mahesh Gupta

HOUSTON: The Bala Vihar program in Chinmaya Mission Houston (CMH) – popular since 1982 for teaching students the cultural values of Hindu scriptures and Vedanta – reached another milestone when its latest batch of students, the Class of 2024, graduated. To honor their achievements and flag off a new chapter in their lives, CMH had organized a grand graduation ceremony.

On the morning of May 18th, Dr. Sameer Sheth, a Bala Vihar alumnus and parent of a graduate of the Class of 2024, recalled memories from 30 years ago when the beautiful tradition of Bala Vihar graduation ceremony began. The teachings of mindfulness and meditation ingrained through Bala Vihar would help the graduates navigate college and beyond, just like it had done for the assembled CMH alumni.

To usher the graduating students into the new era of higher education, CMH’s Acarya Pujya Gaurang Nanavaty lit the main Diya(lamp) inviting the brilliance of knowledge into the Smrti Hall. He congratulated not just the Bala Vihar graduates, but also their teachers, parents, and families who played an integral part in their upbringing. He reminded them that Chinmaya Mission follows the ancient Gurukula tradition of students living from early childhood under the guidance of their Guru before embarking on their own paths at the age of 18.

As the powerful words of the scriptural convocation address beginning with “Satyam Vada, Dharmam Chara” resounded through the hall, Pujya Gaurang Uncle distilled its powerful essence to always living by truth and one’s duty.

He asked all to reflect through regular self-study (Svadhyaya) urging students to respect, support, and reciprocate in goodwill to all teachers who taught them. He highlighted the reverence behind “Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava, Acarya Devo Bhava.”

The Chief Guest, Dr. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, the award-winning author and professor of Creative Writing at University of Houston (UH), spoke about her early experiences with Pujya Gurudeva Swami Chinmayananda during her graduate school in Northern California. She shared key quotes of Pujya Gurudeva and recalled how Pujya Gurudeva’s health problems vanished during his discourses with the power of Gita. Dr. Chitra Divakaruni asked the Bala Vihar graduates to stay connected with the Gita that they had learned in the final two years of their Bala Vihar curriculum.

Then, Pujya Gaurang uncle returned honored the 40 Bala Vihar graduates of the Class of 2024. Each graduate received a book, a trophy, and a gift bag holding their Japa Mala and their Bala Vihar journal called “the little fat book.”

A new scholarship fund, established in the memory of beloved Pujya Darshana Aunty, awarded its first merit scholarship of $2501 to Haley Dave for her dedicated attendance, volunteerism, and faithful learning of Vedanta. Keeping with the spirit of Gurukula tradition, the Class of 2024 then offered Guru Dakshina to Pujya Gaurang Uncle and CMH, a contribution toward the Darshana Nanavaty Memorial Fund. A noteworthy presentation of the Class of 2024 titled an “Ode to Pujya Darshana Aunty” which summarized the comprehensive, worldwide pre-K to 12th grade Bala Vihar curriculum that she had envisioned, moved the audience, especially the Bala Vihar teachers. The memorable, beautiful graduation ceremony concluded with a lunch served with love and respect by the graduates and their families.

  • Bhagavad Gita Chanting – An Enchanting Competition at Chinmaya Mission Houston

Bhagavad Gita Chanting – An Enchanting Competition at Chinmaya Mission Houston

    By Sreedevi Gundamaraju

HOUSTON: Pujya Gurudeva Swami Chinmayananda structured Chinmaya Mission on the knowledge enshrined in Vedantic texts such as the Bhagavad Gita. An incomparable visionary, he understood the need to embed, in young minds, the glory of the Gita. To actualize this vision, he introduced the annual tradition of Chinmaya Gita Chanting Competitions (CGCC), a practice that continues to this day in Chinmaya Mission centers worldwide.

An apex celebration of Pujya Gurudeva Swami Chinmayananda’s 108th Janma Jayanti, the annual Gita Chanting Competition was held in a serene and spiritual atmosphere at Chinmaya Mission Houston (CMH) on May 4th, 2024.

The event was inaugurated by Pujya Acharya Sri Gaurang Nanavaty. Pujya Gaurang Uncle lovingly emphasized Pujya Gurudeva’s vision of connecting our children with the Bhagavad Gita. He encouraged them to chant the Gita which will gradually evolve into learning its meaning and then living life happily, the Gita way. He explained to the children and the audience about how the event was a competition for the individual to better oneself and not just a race of comparison.

Over 130 students had registered for this year’s competition which focused on Gita Chapter 4 – Karma Sannyasa Yoga. The Bala Vihar students from kindergarten to Grade 12, categorized into six groups, participated with enthusiasm. The groupwise competitions were held among varied audiences, and the children chanted and presented in a superb manner. Every parent, teacher, and guest who witnessed these performances was highly impressed with the quality of diction and chanting of the students. For those children to perfect the pronunciation of the Sanskrit verses of the divine Gita, committed training is key. The students diligently practiced since the beginning of the year, and their hard work and devotion culminated in the superior quality of their presentations.

In addition to chanting the verses of the fourth chapter of the Gita during the CGCC, the students were also tasked with translating and explaining the meaning of select verses. The difficulty level of these tasks was based on Grade levels. All groups did an exceptional job in the section where they had to explain the deeper meaning of chosen verses. Special mention should be made of the group of high school students. The audience was highly impressed with their clarity of thought and the ease with which they succinctly presented the summary of Chapter 4 and explained the meaning of select verses with unique everyday analogies. The memorable chanting competition of the Gita ended with a sumptuous lunch for the happy children and their families.

On the Sunday morning of May 5th, cheered by the main congregation at Chinmaya Smrti, Pujya Gaurang Uncle awarded certificates and recognized the winners in all categories as well as all the children who learned the verses of Gita chapter 4 this year. To participate in the next round of this year’s special CGCC, 14 participants were carefully selected from all groups to represent Chinmaya Mission Houston and advance to the state-level competition which will be held in Dallas on May 18th. May Pujya Gurudeva’s grace prevail on these children who seek to understand the Bhagavad Gita and follow its guidelines in their daily lives. Hari Om!
