  • Meenakshi Temple in Pearland Celebrates Mahashivarathri

Meenakshi Temple in Pearland Celebrates Mahashivarathri

    By Dr. S. Chellaiah

PEARLAND: Mahashivarathri, every year, is celebrated on the 14th day of Phalguna month when Chathurdasi falls at night and due to the alignment of celestial bodies, there is a natural flow of high energy among living beings. There are many legends behind the significance of Mahashivarathri.

One legend mentions that this is the night that Shiva married Parvathi. Another one mentions that on this day, Shiva performed the cosmic dance, Tandava, symbolizing the creation, preservation and destruction of the entire infinite universe. Some believe that on Mahashivarathri, Shiva swallowed the poison produced due to the churning of the ocean and kept it in his neck giving it a blue color and hence the name, Neelakandan.

Yet others consider that on this day, Shiva became one with Mount Kailash as an Adiyogi. Whatever be one’s belief, devotees spend the day fasting, meditating, chanting prayers and visiting Shiva temples. Some fast for 24 hours (Nirjala Virat) without eating or drinking anything and break the fast only after sunrise, the next day.

Here at The Meenakshi Temple (MTS) in Pearland, Houston, MahaShivarathri was celebrated on 25th February in a grand, divine, and sublime way. Pradosham called Mahapradosham was also celebrated on the same evening, and abhishekam for Nandi (the vahanam of Lord Shiva) and Lord Shiva were performed first, with the devotees circumambulating the temple carrying Shiva and his consort Parvathi, in a procession on a palanquin. A ankaram for Nandi that day consisted of fruit garlands, made with black, red, and pink grapes, cherry tomatoes, mandarins, oranges, lemons, guava, and apples, a special alankaram indeed, for this night. What a beautiful sight it was!

Then Shivaratri pujas began with the first of the four Kala poojas at 9 pm. For each Kalam, Shivalingam was anointed and abhishekams performed with milk, yogurt, sacred ash, rose water, honey, and Panchamirtham. After the abhishekam, Shivalingam was adorned with new Vatsaram and flower garlands of various hues and colors, imported fresh from Madurai, India. The other poojas were at 11.30 pm, 2 am and 4.30 am. Each alankaram was unique and breathtaking.

Prasadams prepared by both MTS and the devotees were distributed after each pooja. Coffee, tea and other light snacks were supplied by MTS throughout the night. The devotees recited songs from the holy texts in many languages. Though the crowd, a microcosm of India, was the largest for the first kala pooja, it was still sizable and a vibrant one even for the pooja at 4.30 am.

Dances portraying many of Shiva’s thiruvilaiyadals (leelas or playful miracles) were performed by a team of 22 people headed by Dr. Obuli Karthik. Working men and women, housewives, and moms all worked tirelessly to make the decorations, sew the costumes, choreograph, and practice to perfection. The program lasted for nearly two hours. It brought back childhood memories and emotions. Dances were performed by children of all ages from different Bharatanatyam dance schools in the area. There were also Carnatic music concerts. It was a divine and spiritual night, and the cultural program added to the grandeur.

It was a night of entertainment, edutainment, and excitement. A large bedecked Shivalingam model, a replica of Lord Annamalai of Thiruvannamalai, with colorful lights, kept near the Dwajasthambam in the outer mandapam, was the cynosure of all. It invoked the sublime and serene within our souls and became the ‘photo booth’ for most devotees.

What a feast it was to the eyes! All devotees were allowed to perform Aathmalinga Pooja through abhishekam of milk on Shivalingam kept at the center of the main hall. It is said that one attains immortality through this Pooja. Even in India, such opportunities are limited. In the holy text, Thirumanthiram, it is said that if one offers even a mere leaf but with sincerity, faith, and devotion, God accepts it with joy. So, performing this abhishekam was a privilege and exhilarating to all devotees.

The Chairman of the temple Board, Mr. Sundar Arun, in his speech, said that he was overwhelmed with the divine celebration, the increased number of devotees this year, the amazing cultural programs, the many spiritual bhajans all night, and thanked the silpis, priests, administrators and volunteers, the kitchen staff, coordinators, the executive and Board members for their commendable support and contributions.

As the first rays of Sun cleared the darkness, devotees received the Prasadams, quietly praying for their inner darkness to be cleared too, for nescience to be replaced by cognizance, the Maya by the Truth, the bonds by emancipation, and the turmoil by tranquility. All in all, the devotees left the temple with eyes, sleepy and moist with devotion, hearts filled with joy, souls enriched, and minds quieted. Was anyone tired? The answer was “No”. All those present were full of energy and excitement as they left the temple. An experience only to be experienced to savor it fully. As for me, I am eagerly looking forward to next year’s celebration of a very divine, spiritual and a fulfilling night of Shivarathri Celebration. Om Namasivaya!

Together Building the Awakened Home – Laying the First Stone

SUGAR LAND: The “Together Building the Awakened Home” ceremony, held on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at the Universal Door Meditation Center, was a momentous and spiritually impactful. More than 300 people, composed of monastics, honored guests, members, and friends, gathered on this auspicious day to witness the “Laying of the First Stone” for the International Awakened Retreat Center.

The ceremony took place under the warm glow of a setting sun, in a peaceful and natural environment that far
exceeded the typical atmosphere of a groundbreaking event. The event was graced by Awakened Zen Masters Thich Dieu Thien and Thich Thong Hoi, who have fully realized the Awakened Truth and compassionately guided
many generations back to the Source. In the profoundly meaningful ceremony, they placed the first foundation stone, not merely for building a center, but as the Dharma Stone —unveiling the Path to the Unborn, the Undying Reality, for generations to come.

This established Universal Door as an Awakened door, boundless and unlimited in all directions, to welcome everyone to return to the unborn. The receptivity and harmonious energy was palpable as the community gathered with open hearts. Everyone present turned toward the Awakened Zen Masters, inviting them to unveil the deeper meaning of the Dharma Stone—to open the gate of the Unborn — so that in that very instant, the entire
assembly could directly perceive the Unborn, Undying Essence.

When the Awakened Zen Masters transmitted the Unborn Nature, the entire space became still, filled with serenity and boundless openness, laying the foundation for the path that leads all beings back to their True Origin. The sprinkling of sand around the Dharma Stone represented merit and Bodhi seeds, falling to establish the Dharma Realm.

This Center will be a sanctuary where wisdom is nurtured and flourishes, a place where all who arrive may pause and directly perceive the Unborn Essence. The ceremony not only marked the culmination of careful planning
and preparation but also signaled the start of a new era for the Universal Door community and beyond. In revealing the future development plans, the Awakened Zen Masters, along with a dedicated team of monastics, core students, and architects, shared their vision for the International Awakened Retreat Center. The facilities will embody the Awakened Five Natures: infinite Wisdom, boundless Compassion, the pure Essence, endless Tools, and the Great Vow to awaken all beings to return to the Unborn

The Center is open to people of all ages, cultures, religions, and backgrounds; it currently offers weekly Awakened Meditation sessions, monthly retreats, special events, Youth and Teen programs, volunteering opportunities, and other activities to engage all members of the community toward connecting with the Awakened Ones, to have their Unborn Nature awakened and liberate the source of suffering.

“May the boundless power of the AWAKENED ONES reach all beings. May the radiance of the Dharma Stone spread far and wide, infusing the earth, every tree, and every blade of grass—ensuring that Universal Door Meditation Center endures eternally, as a gateway to the Unborn Realm.”

  • Celebrating Holi at Chinmaya Mission Houston

Celebrating Holi at Chinmaya Mission Houston

    By Minakshi Juneja

    The Significance of Holi

Holi, often called the Festival of Colors, holds deep spiritual significance in Hindu tradition. It marks the arrival of spring, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, as well as the joy of life’s renewal. The festival is rooted in several mythological stories, one of the most popular being the story of Bhakta Prahlad and the demoness Holika. This tale celebrates the victory of devotion and righteousness over the forces of darkness and evil.

Beyond its cultural meaning, Holi reminds us to embrace our true nature, letting go of any past grudges or negativity. It encourages a fresh start, inviting us to cleanse our hearts and minds, much like how the colors during the festival represent the vibrancy and purity of life.

    Chinmaya Mission Houston’s Holi Celebration

Each year, Chinmaya Mission Houston (CMH) hosts a special celebration that blends traditional rituals, spiritual teachings, and the joyful, colorful spirit of Holi. At CMH, Holi is more than just a vibrant festival of colors; it is a celebration of love and unity. Whether you are a recent or a longtime devotee, this event promises a day filled with color, spirituality, and community bonding, engaging in the fun and excitement that Holi brings, all while staying connected to the deeper spiritual meaning of the festival.

    Program Highlights

    • Satsang and Devotional Music: The day began on the bright Sunday of March 16 with a beautiful satsanga led by Acarya Gaurang Nanavaty focusing on the significance of Holi from a spiritual perspective. The attendees participated in bhajans, Gita chanting, and Pujya Gaurang Uncle’s spiritual discourse set the tone for the day.
    • Holi Prayers and Rituals: A special puja (prayer ceremony) in the courtyard was performed, seeking the blessings of the Divine to fill the hearts of all with love, compassion, and joy. The bonfire that was lit in the Sivalaya courtyard also emphasized the importance of letting go of negative emotions and embracing harmony and peace.
    • Community Feast: After the prayers, a community feast featuring traditional Holi sweets like Kaju Katli and drinks such as thandai were served, allowing everyone to come together in fellowship and enjoy the festive spirit.
    • Colorful Celebration: Following the community feast, the highlight of the day was the celebration of colors outdoors at Chinmaya Prabha. Volunteers ensured that the celebration remained safe and joyful, with eco-friendly colors and a spirit of inclusivity. Friends and devotees of all ages played games, danced, and celebrated the vibrant spring that was in the air.

    A Message of Unity

At Chinmaya Mission Houston, the essence of Holi was not just about playing with colors but about embracing unity while celebrating the arrival of Spring. It was a reminder that, despite our differences, we are all part of the same divine creation. The colors of Holi represent the diverse experiences of life, and when shared in harmony, they create a beautiful and meaningful mosaic of joy.

The celebration of Holi reminded us of the importance of compassion, forgiveness, and joy in our daily lives. The colorful festivities encouraged us to bond as a community, forgetting differences celebrating the boundless love that connects all.

New President Uma Dama Discusses Ekal Houston and Expanding Donor Engagement

    By Juhi Varma

HOUSTON: Nonprofit Ekal’s success in educating and empowering underprivileged children in India wouldn’t be possible without its committed leaders. Uma Dama, who became president of Ekal’s Houston chapter in October 2024, spoke with us about the organization and its current and upcoming initiatives.

Inspired by Ekal’s mission, Uma ji joined the organization in 2021 and soon took on the role of product development lead.

“I became a volunteer right off the bat,” Uma ji said in an interview.  “After the first six months, I was offered the role of the new product development lead, and I said ‘yes’ immediately.”

An IT professional, Uma ji said she was glad to use her skills to develop products that would help sustain Ekal’s ongoing initiatives.

    Meet Uma Dama

Uma Ji grew up in Hyderabad and moved to the U.S. in 2001 for her studies. She earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of South Carolina.

“I’m the first girl from my mother’s side that passed 10th grade, and I am the only girl child on my father’s side who left India for her education and the only one to carry a master’s degree,” she said. “Education, especially women’s education, is very close to my heart.”

Uma ji married her high school sweetheart, Dipu Kakumani, in 2006. They have two children Abhay and Anjali, in 11th and 8th grade respectively.

After spending many years in Portland, Oregon, the family relocated to the Houston area in 2013 and now resides in Sugar Land.

She is also a dedicated advocate for women in tech, frequently speaking at conferences and earning recognition through award nominations.

Legacy Giving and Ekal Yuva Udaan

Like most nonprofits, Ekal relies on donations and fundraising efforts to sustain its programs and services.

“Towards the end of 2022, we launched a legacy giving program,” Uma ji said. “It’s a platform to incorporate Ekal into people’s wills or trusts.”

Legacy giving or planned giving is a way for individuals to make long-term contributions and leave a lasting impact. Legacy gifts can come in various forms and help ensure the continued support and growth of Ekal’s mission.

In an effort to nurture long-term relationships with donors, Uma ji has introduced Ekal Yuva Udaan (which translates to Ekal Youth Wings).

People join Ekal at different stages of their lives, she said—some are introduced to the organization in high school or college, while others discover it later in their careers, after starting families and raising children of their own. The goal of the program is to develop engagement strategies that are tailored to each life stage.

“I am currently working to mobilize this program across Ekal chapters globally,” Uma ji said.

    About Ekal

Ekal operates 83,340 schools across India.

These schools provide basic education to children in remote and underserved areas, often where access to formal schooling is limited or non-existent. The Ekal schools complement government schools, working together to support each other’s efforts.

The Ekal Women Empowerment Centers teach women skills such as tailoring, enabling them to become economically independent and support their families. To date, these centers have trained over 23,000 villagers across more than 100 locations.

Ekal USA, which operates 65 chapters nationwide, including six in Texas, mobilizes thousands of volunteers across the country. Its primary focus is fundraising.

Author Explains RSS Contributions Since Freedom Struggle, Future Directions

    Speakers included Dev Mahajan

    By Pramod Kulkarni

HOUSTON: Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) is a Hindu volunteer organization founded by Dr. Keshav B. Hegdewar in 1925. The RSS is currently celebrating 100 years of Sangh-inspired institutions and movements that form a strong presence in India’s social, cultural, educational, labor, developmental, political, and other fields of national endeavor. The RSS volunteers prefer to refer to the nation as Bharat.

From 1940 onwards, the task of steering the organization as the second Sar-Sanghachalak (premier leader) came upon the shoulders of Sri Guruji (Madhav Sadashiva Golwalkar, 19.2.1906 – 5.6.1973). Dr. Hegdewar initially worked with Congress and other revolutionaries during the freedom movement. Thereafter, Dr. Hegdewar felt the need to start RSS as an organization of all Hindus, regardless of caste or ethnicity.

A RSS volunteer can be identified through a uniform consisting of a white shirt and dark brown pants. The RSS performs its functions through more than 77,000 shakhas (local chapters) located throughout the country. The volunteers meet regularly with a saffron flag (called the Bhagawa Dhwaj) fluttering in the midst of an open playground. Youths and boys of all ages engage in a variety of indigenous games. There are exercises, Suryanamaskar, sometimes training in skilfully wielding the “danda”. All activities are totally disciplined. The physical fitness programs are followed by group singing of patriotic songs.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, a local organization AHEAD (American Hindus Engagement and Dialogue) held an educational forum on Sunday, Feb. 23 evening at the Indian Summer restaurant in association with Hindus of Greater Houston. The chief guest at the forum was Dr. Ratan Sharda, the foremost author and researcher of the RSS. Dr. Sharda is currently on a tour visiting friends and relatives in the United States.

As explained by principal volunteer Manoj Rathi, AHEAD is a not-for-profit committed to fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding between American Hindus and broader U.S. society. “Our mission is to highlight India’s rise as a global power and promote the civilizational values of knowledge, resilience, and progress that drive its economic and political success,” Rathi explained, “Despite the diaspora’s achievements, their rich heritage remains underrepresented. AHEAD seeks to amplify their voice by engaging policymakers, thought leaders, and communities through dialogue, education, and advocacy, ensuring their contributions and perspectives are recognized in shaping a more diverse and informed society.”

Ratan Sharda has been awarded a PhD for his thesis on RSS. He is an author, columnist, and renowned TV panelist. He has written 9 books of which 7 are on RSS, one on Guru Nanak Dev and one on Disaster Management; translated two books about RSS – The Incomparable Guruji Golwalkar and M S Golwalkar: His Vision and Mission, from Hindi to English; written by the foremost RSS thinker Shri Ranga Hari. He has edited/designed 16 books. His most popular books on RSS are RSS360 degree, Sangh & Swaraj, RSS – Evolution from an Organization to a Movement, Prof Rajendra Singh Ki Jeevan Yatra and Conflict Resolution: The RSS Way. Ratan Sharda has traveled extensively in and outside Bharat.

He was jailed during 1975-77 in the days of Emergency. He was an ERP consultant for two decades in addition to varied industrial experience. He was the founder and secretary of Vishw Kendra (Centre for International Studies), Mumbai for eight years. He is an advisor to many institutions and voluntary organizations.

Dr. Ratan Ji shared profound insights about the 100-year journey of RSS, and its achievements, and discussed his books. He also addressed various issues concerning Bharat and emphasized the importance of fostering accelerated Hindu perspective dialogue and engagement with the mainstream society in the US. The event was graced by the presence of doctors, professors, media professionals, and community leaders, making it a truly impactful and thought-provoking experience.

The first speaker at the forum was Dev Mahajan, one of the founders of the Arya Samaj of Greater Houston and the first Chairperson of the Hindus of Greater Houston Board of Advisors. Mahajan was born in Sialkot, which is now in Pakistan. Speaking of his long association with the RSS, Mahajan recalled, “I remember going to Multan before Independence to attend a lecture by Guruji.” He remembers his father and would-be brother-in-law being arrested after the death of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. “What I am today is based on a foundation of samskars (teachings) I gained from my parents and from attending RSS shakhas,” explained Mahajan.

Subsequently, Dr. Sharda took the floor to explain the impact of the RSS over the last 100 years. The first example of RSS impact was during the partition. “During this tragic event, many acts of violence occurred. In one of my books, I’ve provided a list of 33 RSS volunteers who were killed while protecting Hindus and Sikhs.”

“During the initial Kashmir struggle, it was RSS volunteers who served as guides for the Dogra and Indian Army platoons. They also repaired roads and bridges and helped the Indian Army save Kashmir,” explained Dr. Sharda.

Dr. Sharda also explained the role of RSS volunteers in funding The Rock Memorial to Swami Vivekananda at Kanya Kumari by raising Rs. 1 each from 400,000 people. Another RSS contribution was to Dr. DS Patankar, an archaeologist, who rediscovered the path of the Saraswati River and found the Bhimteka Paleolithic site.

In closing, Ramesh Bhutada, founder and CEO of Star Pipe Products, and also a philanthropist and on the Board of Advisors for the Hindus of Greater Houston, thanked Dr. Sharda for his enlightening remarks and to the audience, said, “We’re all following Hindu thinking with how we live and raise our families, but without realizing it.”

ICC Celebration of 26th January-Republic Day of India Draws Thousands

    HOUSTON: What a Blast!

The India Culture Center (ICC) celebrated India’s 76th Republic Day with gusto and funfair at GSH Event Center on Sunday, January 26. It was a divine coincidence that the exact date of 26th January fell on a Sunday so that the celebration could be easily accessible to the Indo-American diaspora. Despite the rain, thousands came to revitalize themselves with traditional food, shopping and lots of entertainment.

ICC is the oldest Indo-American organization, 52 years running with no slowing down. ICC is marching forward with young blood and old wisdom. Its mission is to preserve the cultural heritage of India.

The Acting Consul of India, Prashant Sona, who himself knows Turkish, Nepalese and several other Indian languages, gave the audience an overview of India’s progress for the next decade.

Phani Kondapi, the Event Chair and Naeem Vehvaria the Cultural Chair, built a team with other directors, guided by President, Parul Fernandes and Vice President Dr. K.D. Upadhaya. Bharat Patel took care of dignitaries while eager Seema Jain and her two daughters took care of the backstage and gifts with immaculate precision by Naeem.

Each director and trustee was given the opportunity to present certificates to the organizers and artists. Uma Mantravadi, an immigration lawyer by profession and co-chair of the event not only sang the Indian National Anthem but continued to help backstage. There were five different MC’s and that was a good because different voices provided impetus to entertainment. Topped by fabulous emcees Naeem Vehvaria, Sunaina Panchal, Lakshmi Haridas, RJ Anish Lakhva and Uma Mantrawadi.

Talking about entertainment – starting with the youngest child on piano, the entertainment grew in dances from 22 dance schools. Kathak, Bharat Natyam was performed with grace and elegance by children and teenagers. Shivangani Academy for Kathak, Dholak and Tabla was an innovation to music through different instruments. The Dhadhak School for Performing Arts for Bharat Natyam brought traditional art of ancient dancing to the forefront. Qala Dance Houston, the Omkara group, Kathak Beats consisted of teenagers with kinetic energy which was a delight to watch. The Sonam Group was semi classical and Desi Beats was a Bollywood Fusion.  Storytellers School of Dance gave graceful Kathak moves, an innovation; as did the Chinese Indian Dance Fusion by the Anyone Can Dance School.

Apart from the entertainment of Dances there was poetry recital by Dr. Sarita Mehta, a well-known Indian author of over 400 poems. The best patriotic song “E Mere Vatan Ke Logo” was sung with the most melodious voice of Payel Mitra – a resident of Houston.

Another thing different was the interactive quiz led by Naeem and RJ Anish which activated the participation of the audience. The Seniors of the Matki Band, an Ismaili group all above 70’s in age, got a standing ovation and “Once More” from the audience. Our very own director Pavanna Gadde showcased the exquisite Indian Saree show by Saree Fans of USA for the audience. Behind the scenes, Trustee Praful Gandhi and his wife manned the ICC booth and Trustee Santosh Verma managed the slide show with BOD Manoj Nair throughout the 6 hours event. Raghvendra Sengar managed the volunteers and Divyendu Singh helped with booths.

Thanks goes to all the Trustees especially Hasu Patel, Pramod Bengani, Hemant Patel, Praful Gandhi, Santosh Verma and VP K.D. Upadhaya, Malla Mekala, Phani Kondapi, Naeem Vehvaria, Uma Mantrawadi, Sangeeta Dargan who gave the vote of thanks, Seema Jain, Bharat Patel, Gaurav Jhaveri and Juli Matthew.
